What to watch next?

I'm almost through season 4.. Now I have to find a new show to watch..

ReGenesis is one of my all-time favorite shows so far.
Here's a short list of some of my favorite shows (I might have forgotten some):

Millennium
Firefly
Twilight Zone
The Outer Limits
Dollhouse
Dexter
Pushing Daisies
Twin Peaks
Eureka
Nowhere Man
X-Files

Comedy:

Flight of the Conchords
Third Rock from the Sun
The IT Crowd
30 Rock
Seinfeld
The Big Bang Theory
The Sarah Silverman Program
Important Things with Demetri Martin
Eastbound & Down
The Brak Show
Curb Your Enthusiasm

Here's a short list of shows I'm considering to watch in full:
Atlantis (all of em, that'll keep me busy for a while)
Entourage
Leverage
Glee
24
Bones

Shows I kinda liked but lost interest in:
Burn Notice
Heroes
Lost

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch here, but now that you know my tastes I'd like to hear what you guys think I should watch next. As you might have noticed some of the things I enjoy most in shows is intelligence, science, fiction, science-fiction, but I do also really like horror/fiction a lot. I've watched a lot of horror, Masters of Horror included, some of which I liked, but not all. I really like ReGenesis a lot though, and I really doubt there will be a show that can equal it. For science-fiction I have watched and like Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5 and all Star-Trek shows. I purposely never watched Stargate for several reasons, one being that I though it was stupid they made a show out of it when it came out; years and many rave reviews later I decided to save it for a rainy day (or more like year :p ).. I doubt there will ever be a sci-fi show I like as much as Firefly though..

Alright, there's some background. I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

I like many of the same shows. Journeyman is no longer on, but it was good.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will check out both Jericho and Journeyman (I actually saw a couple episodes and enjoyed them, but just forgot about the show).

Something that really bothers me is that most of the time I start watching a show and it turns out to be really good, it gets canceled after 1 or 2 seasons.. I remember the whole fan campaign with Jericho, so that must be yet another really good show that ended too soon.. You can probably see from my list there's several of these shows that got ended when they shouldn't have, like Millennium, Pushing Daisies, Dollhouse, and worst of all: Firefly.

If any show could ever be brought back I wish it was Firefly. I don't know why, but I just really love that show so much...

Right now I'm watching Bones. I had seen several episodes in the past and remembered I really liked that show, but just didn't remember anything about it. Now watching it after so many years it's like a whole new show, and the good thing is, it has 5 seasons and is still running. Although I know volumetric imaging is real, I think they should have left out the Angelator, as it bothers me (I'm a 3D artist) that Angela can get things done so fast.. I know for a fact it takes a whole team probably a week to do those 10-20 seconds of animation you see on each episode.. Other than that I love it, although less scientific than ReGenesis, it's still pretty accurate, from what I can tell.

I also started watching Glee, which is an amazing show. It does requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, to which I yield without struggle (it's supposed to be a comedy show anyway). It has great humor and really amazing musical talent, which I myself as a musician and artist really appreciate a lot. Although I do kind of enjoy the drama, I don't think it's really necessary for the show to become so serious sometimes, but I can live with it.

I'm also watching Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, which requires a certain mood to watch. I'm at 3 out of 6 episodes, and not sure when I will watch the next, but it has some amazing actors, 2 of which you might recognize from the IT crowd (Moss and Douglas Denholm).

Anyway, if anyone has more suggestions, keep em coming.

Isn't it obvious? You need to watch Doctor Who. 2005 and up.

Honestly its good. Gotta give it a chance though. Takes a little bit to get a feel. Id say watch the first full season and see if you wanna continue.

Thanks guys. I will definitely watch Doctor Who, as it has always been highly regarded. That reminds me, I really loved Life on Mars (UK version), but I didn't like Ashes to Ashes. I watched the pilot of the US version of Life on Mars and all I can say is, I'm SO glad I saw the UK version.

For the other suggestions, I watched all of Quantum Leap, and back then it was one of my favorite shows. I used to love V as a kid, but I'm waiting for the new series to have some more seasons before watching it. Of course I loved The Dead Zone. Knight Rider I really loved as a kid, but I don't see myself really liking it now.. I really liked the Highlander movies (my all-time favorite quote is "There can be only one.."), and I watched the show every now and then. It's not a show that I would put on the top of my list to be honest. I will definitely start watching Medium. Farscape is another awesome suggestion! I totally forgot about that show! I have watched Sliders before, although a while back, I might watch that again, I did really love it.. I don't think I'm going to watch StreetHawk, but SeaQuestDSV definitely seems interesting, so I might give that a try.

I'm also going to watch Happy Town after it's cancelled and Harper's Island as well. I'm also going to check out Fringe, which I was skeptical about and not very interested in after reading reviews, but my brother recommended it, so it must be good. Another show that I might find interesting is Psych, and I will definitely watch Castle, but I'm gonna let that one run a couple more seasons.

I forgot to mention Supernatural, which is right up my ally. And for comedy I can't believe I didn't list Arrested Development, one of my favorite shows ever. Especially the character of GOB Bluth.. He's my hero. Actually, I probably left out a bunch of comedy shows, as suddenly I'm thinking about Get a Life, about a 30 year old paperboy.. What a show! And Married With Children, but I think that doesn't even have to be on any list as it's almost impossible not to like it.. Kids in the Hall, Simpsons, Futurama, etc.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions! :D
More suggestions always welcome!

I have a very similar taste in shows that you do and on a whim I picked up the first season of the new BSG and fell in love with it.

reply

Yea too bad journeyman was so short, but the comedic intrest in it, is great in Fringe my all time favourite show, Time Trax is old but still okay. 12 Monkeys is intresting as well, nothing like the movie though. You want over the top action and romance try Banshee and Black Sails.. Continium, Defiance, Dominion and Constantine and other scifi/fantasy shows. Something like Dominion is The Messengers. Beaking Bad is a must for adrelline junkies and its followup Better call saul. Doll House where you program someone for a mission.. Or program someone from scratch in Orphan Black. Terra Nova and Revolution got cancelled but worth a watch. Not sure about The last ship, Starcrossed or Tomorrow People. The 100 and 4400 are other scifi shows..

If you're going to watch "New Who" (aka Doctor Who 2005+), you'll also want to check out its spinoff, Torchwood. But watch season 1 of Who first.

Another British series you might like is Survivors. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1258189/ It's about a post-apocalyptic world where most of the population has died from a virus. There have been two 6-episode seasons so far, and I love it. This new one from 2008 is actually a remake of one from the 70s, but you'd probably have a hard time finding that one.

Fringe is fantastic. It's a little slow at first during the first half of the first season, but around episode 9 things pick up. The same thing kind of happens in season 2 as well but it is a show well worth sticking around for.

I'm wondering as a fan of Firefly and Dollhouse, how could you not be a fan of Buffy and Angel? All these are the brainchildren of Joss Whedon.

If you liked Battlestar Galactica chances are very good you'd enjoy Stargate Universe. I know you don't like the Stargate franchise but for one, sgu is not like the rest at all, and 2 sg1 is actually quite good, give it a 2 episode chance. I was like you and didn't like the movie (or just thought a tv version would blow) but it turns out they made it into a new entity entirely, with the dry witty Richard Dean Anderson at the helm and far less Egyptian stuff. So I also recommend sg1 (at least up to season 7 or 8).

But Buffy/Angel are the most enjoyable series I've ever seen, rewatch value is so far unlimited.

Medical Investigation was similar to ReGenesis and almost as good - and had the cute one from CSI NY in it

Half Irish, Half German - hated by all. But at least I'm not Welsh

reply

Yup, that's my epitaph: "It might have been worse, I could have been Welsh".

reply

For the love of all that is good! If you're trying to get him into Stargate DON'T suggest Stargate Universe! It does nothing right... almost nothing good in that show..

Space Above and Beyond - is excellent!
Odyssey 5 - is excellent!
Invasion - is excellent!
Threshold - is descent!
Dark Skies - is descent!
The 4400 - I rate as awesometacular!
The Walking Dead - I rate as awesometacular!
American Gothic - Just downloaded, haven't seen yet.

My additions to the list:

ReGenesis
Jeremiah
Outer Limits (all)
Twilight Zone (all)
Better Off Ted
Malcolm in the Middle
American Dad
CAPRICA - WATCH IT!

You're a load in my pants Al - Officer Dan

There was a hard to understand show called Intruders-2014 and Utopia-UK.. Unlike z nation and the strain which are like the walking dead. British shows really takes more thinking.

I'd recommend the 21st century Doctor Who. Quirky at first taste, but it opens up like wine. The more you savour it, the more you understand the rules of this odd "whoverse", the greater your enjoyment of a really creative and thoughtful series. Great fun.

I'd recommend Endgame, too, especially since it's currently the focus of a fan-led campaign to renew the show for a second season in Canada. Quirky in a different way, but lively and fun. Available on iTunes or streaming video outside of its regular markets.
