pisses me off

A. Carlin should have been number one.
B. No John Leguizamo, how can he not be on the list?
C. Dennis Leary should have gotten a better rank

ehh, this list that CC has released has generated much debate, but this is my opinion so i know i'm right

I just don't understand how Letterman got to number 4? The only explanation I see is that he works for CBS, and Viacom owns both CBS and Comedy Central.

Serisouly, the guy does 2 stand-up jokes on his show, and that's it! How can he be in the top 100, let alone the top 10?!?

I don't agree with you on the George Carlin thing, just a difference in taste, but the other two points you make I do agree with.

reply

Letterman was #15. And comedians voted for the list. They probably saw him when he was a stand-up in the 70's.

How was Robin Harris not even on the list. DL Hugely, Cedric The Entertainer, and Bernie Mac were on there and they all stole from Harris. *beep* That List.

Yeah, what do you think Carrey did before he was on In Living Color, stand up. Its what got him discovered as the great physical comedian he is today. Conan doesnt even deserve to be on any list, he has writers, and half of his crap act is that stupid thing he does with his pants.

Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.

Carlin should've been the undisputed #1. Lenny Bruce is that high up for breaking barriers, not for being funny. I guess that's why it's called the 100 Greatest, not the 100 Funniest. If it was 100 Funniest, it could possibly go Carlin and then take your pick. I like where Steve Martin is at, he's always been my favorite stand-up comedian. Eddie Murphy should be ahead of Roseanne, and Bill Cosby is, in my opinion, funnier than Richard Pryor. More people find Cosby funny, he appeals to more people, and his humor could be translated into more peoples' lives. Gallagher should be higher up. I wanna say that right now, he's waaaaaay better than Janeane Garofolo. She should not have been on the list. Brian Regan is much funnier than her, or Robert Schimmel for that matter.

Is it just me, or did Comedy Central show a LOT of bias here? Chappelle is hilarious, but he hasn't been better longer than Drew Carey (many don't feel he's that funny, but I could've put several peoples' names there). Bill Hicks, "The Voice of Dissidence," was very funny (albeit self-righteous) in his short tenure and deserved a top-40 ranking, but prolly not the top-20. Steven Wright is much funnier than Bill Hicks. And Sam Kinison. And Roseanne. Rodney Dangerfield could be in the Top 4 now, but he's dead so I'm probably showing some one-sidedness there too since he was a favorite of mine as well. Oh well, he inspired more laughter to more people (black, white, Latino, Asian, penguins, desklamps) than Richard Pryor did, I believe. There's more wrong with the list (LEWIS BLACK ahead of some of the other people????), but I won't get into it.

Bull and Sh!t.

Roseanne funnier than Bill Hicks? ROSEANNE!?!?

You know to be a great standup in my opinion you need to be 3 things:

1) The ability to be funny, thats something you'll have a hard time faking.

2) You need to be able to tell a story, the corner stone of most great jokes is being able to keep the audiences attention long enough to deliver that killer punchline.

3) You need to have something to *beep* say.

Roseanne for me has none of these things, maybe theres enough morbidly obese people in the states who can relate to her on that level but i never got what was so special about her, did she work for pork rinds? I don't know.

Bill Hicks on the other hand had all of these and people to this day still rip on his act either the format or just straight up stealing it changing a few punchlines then calling it thier own. Everytime this is tried it turns out to be watered down bollocks.

Had you of not mentioned Roseanne in the same sentence as Hicks i probably would of let this slide, because your talking about the funny factor which is a matter of taste and opinion which is why i'm not going to say anything about Wright because Wright's nothing more than a comic (who also in my opinion sucks balls) as with 95% of the people on that *beep* list. Bill Hicks was more than that, to quote something else that may sound a bit extreme it is in essence true...

Bill Hicks was not a comedian. He wasn’t the next Lenny Bruce. He was a *beep* prophet. Go buy all his albums and listen to them over and over and over again. Not for entertainment. Not for a chuckle. Listen to Bill Hicks to save your soul.

Why do people react this insanely with regards to Bill Hicks? Because 15 years ago he died and everything that he was speaking against has enveloped us. We have another Bush in the white house, we went back to Iraq, we are still considered a herd of dollar signs rather than people, we are still governed by ancient religions that no longer serve their purpose because they're based on fear rather than love (a fact that has never been more relevant than it is today) and if your still skeptical Basic Instinct 2 was released a few months ago. Thats how *beep* timeless Bill Hicks material is, 15 years on it could have been made yesterday, all you have to do is change a few names and give it your own spin which a hell of a lot of comics have done since he passed on.

What you call "self-righteous" i just call the truth, because that all it was. Feel free to go back to hearing Roseanne bitch about how hard it is to open a packet of nuts now.

Judging from these posts, thank God only COMEDIANS were allowed to vote for this list and NOT fans.

The revolution will now be televised. Sundays on Adult Swim.

Johnny Carson should've been in the top 5
Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Henny Youngman should have been higher.

Johnny Carson 1925-2005. We will never forget you.

This list should really be named; America's Greatest Stand-Ups of all time.

Only 9 of the 100 aren't American (and even Jim Carrey is technically an American now), and all of those on the list that aren't American performed extensively in America.

I have no problem with listing some of the stand-up greats, but don't make it sound like these are the best stand-ups in the world, when it's clearly a American-biased list.

reply

The list blows, half the comedians on the list aren't even funny and Roseanne being in the top 10 is just *beep* Louis CK is probably one of the funniest comedians on the list and hes 98#

reply

what the *beep* is jeff foxworthy even doing on the list? was that a joke?

reply

I think the list is kind of ignorant...

Just check imdbs top list of "stand up comedy"

Eddie izzard has the most shows with best score, that has to count for something...

#75 my ass ^^

that pisses me off that the american people have to watch crap like comedy central list of 100 best standups :/

reply

I agree that there should be several people on the list that aren't there (Brian Regan, Jim Gaffigan, Mitch Hedberg, etc), several people who shouldnt be on there at all (Leary, Bernhard, etc), several people who should be higher (Izzard, CK, Hope, etc), and there are people who should be lower (ROSEANNE!, Letterman, etc), but overall i think its a good list. And if they were to revise it today it would probably be a little different, as some comedians who weren't very well known at the time would get more recognition and there may be some righted wrongs.

This program said it was conducted by comedians, but I would like to know exactly how the survey/panel/whatever it was worked and who it consisted of

I can't believe Leno is #27....his monologues on the Tonight Show are abysmal. They hardly even get vanity laughter.
