in this one website, i forgot what it was called, but executive producers, Matt Negrete and Eddie Guzelian talked about the original plot for the episode Homecoming. it was supposed to be an hour long episode where it was supposed to be career day or something like that and where a main character (obviously Rose) was going to be killed off, but it was too dark for Disney. so, they decided to change it and shorten it into what the episode of what Homecoming is right now. Instead of killing off Rose, they decided that Jake rewrites Rose's history and you know the rest.

They decided to get rid of Rose b/c her relationship with Jake was complicated enough. i wish i could remember the rest of that blog thingee-ma-bob, but dragonupresource.net got suspended, b/c they had a link for it.

UPDATE: i found the site! http://amdrag.blogspot.com/
"About two years ago, Eddie and I assembled our writing staff to discuss the direction of season two. After a lengthy brainstorming session, we collectively came up with what we felt would be a great season-ending episode idea: The Huntsman blackmails Rose and forces her to betray Jake just as Jake surrenders his dragon powers to be with her. It screamed big and epic and we wanted it to be our huge two-part season finale.

The story took place during Career Week at school. Jake realizes that as the American Dragon, he'll never get to live the life he wants. He’ll never get to have a career, never get to take time off and travel, he’ll never get to be, well… normal. But at least he had Rose. When Jake gets the last Aztec Crystal Skull, he thinks Rose can free herself from the Huntsclan and they can finally be together. But as it turns out, the Dragon Council forbids dragons from dating slayers. Fed up, Jake surrenders his dragon powers forever. That's when Rose betrays him and all heck breaks loose. While Haley and Sun are sent to destroy the skulls inside a volcano, Rose shows up to retrieve them. And, well, Sun ends up a little worse for the wear.

Did we mention it was dark? Well, it was. As it turned out, it was a little too dark for the Disney Channel. We were given two options. If we still wanted to do a two-part episode, it would have to be comedic and have nothing to do with the mythology of the show. But if we chose to do the more dramatic Jake/Rose story, it would have to be done as a typical 22-minute episode. In the end, our choice was obvious – we would tell the story we wanted to tell only in half the time. The story was simplified, Career Day became Homecoming, and the rest is history.

(Quick side note: some of the Career Day themes will later be explored in “Being Human.” Stay tuned…)

Unfortunately, having a two-parter turned into a one-parter left a gaping hole in our production schedule. While I was busy retooling “Career Day,” Eddie had to come up with a brand new story and write it in a matter of days. He locked himself in his office and days later, he emerged with the final script for a brand new episode called “Switcheroo.” Hats off to him for pulling off such an amazing feat.

As for the Jake/Rose ending in Homecoming, we must have discussed it for days. At this point in our production, we knew that we had been picked up for thirteen additional episodes. If Jake and Rose finally got together in Homecoming, well, that would be the end of their story… and in a way, the end of the show. As cruel as it sounds, we weren’t quite ready to give Jake and Rose their happily ever after. Not yet, anyway.

So we added another obstacle: Jake rewrites history and undoes his entire relationship with Rose. It would be really dramatic and it would change the course of their relationship forever. In the subsequent episodes after Homecoming, our plan was to have Jake trying to move on from Rose while she's still going to school with him. (After all, she deserves a normal life without the interference of magic or magical creatures.) We envisioned Jake trying to put her out of his mind while she's sitting right next to him in class day in a day out. In fact, "Supernatural Tuesday" was originally going to be about Jake's jealousy of Nigel... because he's started dating Rose! The new storyline would be totally angsty and we loved it! We even mapped out where their relationship would go from there, finally culminating in yet another epic two-part finale.

But just as the final draft of "Homecoming" was about to be completed, the Channel told us to get rid of Rose. For good. The network felt that kids just tuning in – kids who never saw Homecoming -- would be confused. "Why doesn't Rose remember Jake?" Jake and Rose’s relationship was already complicated and the whole “rewriting history” thing made it that much more so. We protested, but the message was clear: Rose had to go. So a day before the cast recorded Homecoming, we rewrote the last scene, added the line about Hong Kong, and away Rose went.

Rest assured, gentle readers, that Eddie and I have done our best to keep Rose alive in the remaining episodes. Yes, she’s off to Hong Kong for a while, but her presence is felt in “Siren Says” and “The Shaggy Frog.” “Siren” deals with Jake trying to dip his toes back into the dating scene and in “Shaggy Frog” Spud learns what Jake has known all along – that being magical does, in fact, have a down side. Oh, and our series finale isn’t called “Hong Kong Longs” for nothin.’

And as we wrote in our previous blog entry, “The Best of What’s to Come,” we still have some interesting non-Rose stories left to tell. Really. We promise.

This is what was supposed to happen.

Jake rewrote history in the rewritten Homecoming and Rose, even though she lacked any memory of Jake, stayed in New York. Jake would try hard to forget her but probabaly fail in the end.

Disney however, wanted Rose gone. They thought that kids, young ones who didn't Homecoming and probaably couldn't go on tv.com, would be confused, so a day before voices were recorded, they wrote in the "moving to Hong Kong" line by Rose.

But don't worry, she'll come again in Hong Kong Longs.
