It's funny how

It's funny how, in this film the characters who are bad people are all Irish. Ria only meets nice and good people in America.
Is it the same in the book?

I think it would make a bit more interesting story, if Ria also met some not so nice people. Marilyn's brother-in-law might be a bit pushy, but is a nice man.
