Michael W Smith and Britney Spears???

I was rather disppointed in the song that came out of that movie called "All in the Serve." After listening to it several times, it seems like it has the same chordal progression and melody in the chorus as Britney Spears "Oops I did it again" except the MDS version is in B flat minor and Britney's version is in D minor. Also, the tempo is almost exactly the same. The first verse, to me, has almost the same feeling in both songs as well. Is Michael W Smith taking musical direction and influence from Britney Spears??

That last sentence made my day.

thanks.

HA HA HA HA HA HA....HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...I'm laughing so hard I could crap. MWS is the greatest writer and composer ever in my opinion. And to say he is getting material inspiration off that little teenie-bopper??? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

How long have you been around? Michael has been writing and composing since before Spears was even a thought.

There are so many millions of songs out now and coming out in the future, that some are bound to have the same chord progressions and similar beats.

What you heard is only a complete coincidence.

Michael W. Smith is THE BEST song writer/singer ever.
He is NOT getting anything from Britney Spears.

One only needs to listen to any two or three movie scores from Hanz Zimmer to see that he recycles the same stuff over and over. Careful! Are you calling MWS a recycler? I actually heard a little Taylor influence in that song, and I know he came before Spears.

My son got Dance Dance Revolution, and Oops I did it again was on there, and I thought it was the MWS song. Seriously, it's probably just a coincidence, but if you listen to both, they start out THE SAME.

there are so many songs out there that have the exact same chord progression. i can guarantee you that MWS didn't "steal" this from brittney spears

reply

Ha! I thought I was the only one out there that thought it sounded like the Britney Spears song. Every time the song starts, oops I did it again goes through my head. Glad to see I wasn't just imagining it.

Am I the only one here who thinks comparing him to Britney is just not right at all. I didn't hear "oops I did it Again" when I just listened to "All in the Serve", but that might possibly be because Britney Spears and her music is the furthest thing from my mind when I am listening to Michael W. Smith.

Amen to that!

If you love Jesus Christ 100% (and He is #1 in your life) copy this and use it for your signature.

You are right man, I thought of the same thing. I wouldn’t say that he is taking influence or musical direction from Britney Spears, but let’s call this “unconscious influence”. And honestly it feels cheap. Cheap rip off, probably not on purpose, but it’s obvious where he got his “inspiration” from. -.-

Ok, ok, everyone take a deep breath and calm down. For all of you that think Michael W. Smith was "influenced" by Britney - I want you to listen to his album/cd/tapes from the mid-eighties. (About the time that Britney was being born) The song in question sounds like it was taken right off of THE BIG PICTURE. So, I would say if anyone got "infulenced" it was Britney and not Michael-he did what he has always done so well!

Also, if you bother to research it Michael didn't write it by himself, but it was a joint effort of Steve Taylor and Michael W. Smith.

Michael W. Smith is a legend in the CCM community. I seriously doubt he was copying Britney Spears. I know that many artists have copied him over the years. The answer to your question is, No. I don't think MWS is heading in the same direction musically as Britney. God bless.

well i know Britney Spears did not make her own music... Max Martin n some other known producers did...

wrezanini, you're terribly wrong. Actualy, the chords change every two beats from minor B flat to Major F and back to B flat again. The melody goes like "Ooops, I did it again" only for one and a half measures. It happens, cuz there're only 12 possible notes that you can choose for a song... And we have them from hundreds of years back. So... it's understandable.
