Why there are only 5 episodes instead of 6?

The "Rois Maudits" old series (1972) had 6 episodes: each one for each book (there is a 7th book but everyone can disregard it because everything happened lots of years after the end of the 6th book).

Now, reading in someplace I found that the new series has... only 5 episodes.

Had the production compressed all the 6 books in 5 parts?

Yes, that's exactly what happened. Although it's been a long time since I've read the books, watching the 2005 series left me with a feeling that many original scenes have been left out. Believe me: stick with the 1972 classic as this "new & improved" (sic) version is nothing but an utterly tasteless waste of time. Josée Dayan shot the entire series (5 X 90 mins) in less than three months... which accounts for the perpetual winter (spanning a dozen years) featured in all the exterior scenes !
The only actor worthy of notice in this shameless disaster is Claude Rich. But then, has he ever been less than great, even on a bad st ?
