I liked it

I always enjoyed Jeremy Brett as Sherlock, but this new Sherlock may be more in character. The drug use would actually make Holmes more detached, more removed from reality. So I enjoyed it. But it doesn't take much to entertain me. I always have low expectations from movies, and sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised.

How refreshingly open and forthcoming. I appreciate your honesty.

I liked it too, in fact I liked it very much. As someone else has said, it isn't "Holmes" in the pure sense of the word, but it was very interesting and I thought Rupert made an *excellent* Holmes.

You are correct, the drug use does make things a bit more "dreamlike". A good comparison would be Johnny Depp's drug usage in From Hell, which gives the piece a very "lucid dreaming" atmosphere that is quite powerful. In the case of this film it certainly adds an otherworldly quality which enhances the feeling that something isn't quite right, that we are in a nightmare state. It is surreal and extremely effective in achieving the goal of pulling the viewer into the world the director has created.

I feel a bit like you in that I don't have extremely high expectations and frankly it doesn't take much to entertain me. All I want is a decent story, a little adventure and I enjoy the fact that I can (usually) find something good in most anything. I think that is a good quality that allows one to enjoy a lot more. This is very different than not having "good taste", instead it is simply adjusting ones expectations per whatever it is you're watching. I don't have the same expectations for a new Martin Scorsese film that I do for a new Scooby Doo movie (grin). If a person can set aside their "film snob" pretensions, when the circumstances call for it, there is a lot more out there to be enjoyed.

I consider Brett to be the quintessential Holmes, but I think it's fun to see what other actors bring to the role. I think he got the closest to the canonical Holmes that any actor ever has, but you are right when you say that perhaps he (Brett) left out some elements from his (Holmes') character that Rupert here has adroitly captured.

I enjoyed your comments and insight.

I thought Rupert was excellent. I wish they had done a couple of more "Made for TV" Sherlock Holmes stories with Rupert.

Me too. I think they would have been wonderful. I thought he wsa a good Holmes and I enjoyed the updating.

I enjoyed it as well, especially Rupert Everett whom always does well with a part and was perfect in this one as was his cohort in crime, Ian Hart. I wish they had made more of them. Now with the contemporary twists on the new series and Robert Downey jr in the movies, I doubt we will see another one with Rupert.
