For a French actress? Is there a rule somewhere stating that all French actresses must be knockouts? There are plenty of French actresses who are not particularly attractive, but if they're good we cherish them for their remarkable talents.
That said, I have never really liked Emmanuelle Devos. And not just because of her appearance.
So many movies, so little time...
I have seen many french movies, and never have I come across one as plain and bland looking as this one. Majority of French actresses I have seen are attractive. I dont know what other unattractive french actresses you are referring to so I think saying that there are plenty of french actresses are not attractive is an overstatement. Maybe two or three at the most. And this Emmanuelle takes the cake!

And here is the problem with small-minded people living in a fantasy world. One minute you're telling us she's "ugly" and the next minute you speak oof "plain" and "bland looking"

A majority of French actresses? I don't know about that. Many lead actresses, in any country by the way, are way above average in looks, which is usually further compounded by heavy use of makeup, judicious camera angle, lighting and plastic surgery.
I do think Devos looks like an average woman, which does not make her ugly. Merely a perfectly alright human being.
It's really too bad that to you, plain = ugly.
Well, I think Susan Sarandon is very pretty, even for her age. That being said, the wife was very, very frumpy.

Thanks to the OP who found it necessary to point this out but if he was standing in a line near her at a grocery store Im betting she would be the one that his/all eyes were attracted to.
shareI guess that would depend on where the grocery store was located. A grocery store in Sweden, Brazil, Venezuala, Argentina or Italy - she would not get noticed. Maybe a grocery store in small town America, she might stand out.

shareI dont believe her looks are plain at all. Her features just may not be as perfectly symetrical as most women chosen for rolls in film. In the "real world" she still stands out as pretty god damned attractive
