It didn't work for me because...

it seems her co-workers and government employees, the one in close contact with her, were the only ones not to realize she is a woman. it was like watching a superman movie and wondering how stupid everyone is. if not for that, it could have been a much better attempt.

first.. sorry for my english.
Well, IMHO that´s not about Fariba´s cover be (or not) "good enough". It seemed to me that it´s about all the others being more worried about "it" be an exiled/foreign. Lots of prejudice come first than think about her/him as a person. Although she is harrased all the time, she is quite invisible... and she works hard to remain this way - till Anne starts her game/bet. Of course, women can recognize women due to subtle behaviors...but I doubt busy (and no commited government employees) and low middle class man could´ve...

If you pay attention to the entire film none of them are looking to question her appearance. Indeed, they take her lack of masculinity as a sign that they (Uwe specifically and German maculinities in general) are superior to the quieter, more docile masculinity being performed by Fariba/Siamak. In fact, it's that lack of conventional masculinity which makes Siamak/Fariba such a target. That is why Uwe belittles him and challenges him, it is a reinforcement of his masculinity. As for practical questions about her voice during the film, Fariba, as Siamak, does not speak all that much, and when she does speak it is in a hushed whisper.

As part of the trans-community I found her drag performance (Fariba performing Iranian masculinity as Siamak) convincing. She had a small chest and with layering was able to hide it sufficiently enough to pass. Likewise, her cover was breached, in a rather convincing moment, at the strip club/brothel.

I stumbled upon this film about 30 minutes into it when it was shown on tv here recently, and I actually had very little idea that Siamak was actually a woman until the scene near the end. I could just be slow, but I thought it was pretty convincing.

Thing is, that you at first do not doubt when someone tells you that the person in front of you is a man or a woman. You just accept it and move on. Of course with time you start wondering, but not if you don't really care about that person in the first place.

Haha, dude i think you're just slow

exactly, she didn't look convincing as a man at all, which took me completely out of the movie
