Can't believe I watched this....

and liked it! 0_O

Hilarious movie.

reply

I liked it as well.

It's such a wierd and silly movie....but I liked it.

reply

But was it supposed to be a comedy?

reply

yes how can that be doubted?

extra humour is derived from how seriously the actors are taking their roles ...

reply

Actually, no. In the DVD commentary Minoru Kawasaki says the scene where Calamari Wrestler has sex with his girlfriend is meant to be a commentary on the yakuza's stranglehold on the seafood industry in Tokyo.

It's layers upon layers.

reply

Like great sushi!

I read something online that said it was supposed to parody all the Rocky movies.

GREAT film.

reply

Whoever says this parodies Rocky has it wrong. This movie is more of a parody of Japanese pro-wrestling. Godozan = parody of Rikidozan, IMGP Heavyweight Title = parody of IWGP Heavyweight Title, Super Japan Pro Wrestling (Correct me if I am wrong on this one, I haven't watched the movie in awhile) = parody of New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Three wrestlers in the film:
Koji Taguchi (aka the octopus wrestler) was played by real life wrestler Akira Nogami (known simply as AKIRA)
The calamari wrestler was played by real life wrestler Osamu Nishimura
Yoshihiro Takayama is also an actual wrestler.

It doesn't matter what you think it parodies though because wrestling fan or not, if you want an odd film, this one certainly should be one you get.

reply

Yeah, its a parody of, pretty much, the japanese equivalent to Rocky films.

& of course its a comedy. Besides the many famous wrestlers in the film, a lot of the actors are pretty famous as well.

I thought it was pretty well done.
:D
i want that freakin COSTUME!

reply

I don't know if I could call it a parody..
But I remember a couple of things that reminded me of Rocky
- The calamari calling her girlfriend like rocky did when he won the first fight..
- The once opponent training him to beat a stronger one
- The trainig scene itself (the only thing missing was the Eye of the Tiger song)

and there could be a couple more.. these are the ones I remember..

Like I said, not a parody-... but it has some common points that I think were not unintentional..

reply

This is easily the most amusing movie I've seen.
