As a Domincan living in the Dominican Republic...

And also as a huge fan of history and this book, I really hope they don't solely surround Urania's story with the movie. All 3 stories should get equal attention and the books integrity be respected.

Luis LLosa sucks, so I'm nervous about his assistance in this. I think that it should've gotten heavier star power and historian assistance, but oh well.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be another ''In the time of the butterflies'', wich as a book was better than ''La fiesta del Chivo'', but was pathetic as a movie.

Your nerves are justified...unfortunately.
..and yes the movie is principally Urania's story....
Found many characters miscast and hearing it
in English is awkward.....
I was hoping it would be good...but..
Yes, too bad about Time of the Butterflies; could have been
a good film too.....

I'm dominican too, living in here as well. I saw the film tonight.... it should've been filmed in spanish, that's one of my biggest complains. Another thing, one of the book's stories, about Trujillo's last day, was non-existant in the film. Could've shown a bit more. A lot was left out. (Being a long book, 500-600 pages?, I knew a lot was going to be left anyways..). Some of the "30th of May heroes" are not even mentioned. A historian should've helped more, maybe.

All in all, it was good. Most people around the world don't know that one of the bloodiest and longest dictatorships of recent times happened in here, this tiny little country of only 48,000km^2 ...

The film should've been in spanish. John Sayles would've been a good director, he has been good directing films in spanish before. But there are many other choices... this Luis Llosa guy wasn't the best, and the could've cast more known actors too.

I'm not innocent, but you're guilty.

To be honest, I was very dissapointed for a couple of reasons. I saw the movie dubbed in spanish and it just bothered me that the language used was not right for the time nor the people of the country. I am a huge geek for anything of the Trujillo era having heard so many stories and personally knowing of the people mentioned in the movie. I just would have hoped the movie would have been in SPanish for one and maybe even using Dominican actors. I mean, its our history and I don't understand why once again like in The Time of the Butterflies, foreigners are the ones depicting our history when there are so many capable Dominican Actors.
In NY, i have seen "La Fiesta del Chivo" play at the Repertorio Espanol and to be honest, I enjoyed it so much more than I did this movie. There were so many important people and things left out from the movie that it was quite disapointing.
