'You can't beat me'?

I'm not an english major, so I don't see how the murderer was illiterate for using that phrase. Please explain?

He's not. The murderer was a literature major. The "You can't beat me" was a clue.

The detective was trying to figure out why such a smart literature guy would use a crude phrase, instead of a quote from a popular literature book.

I think the killer desperately wanted to be recognized as a great "beatnik" author, like Jack Kerouac; a celebrated member of the Beat Generation. That's why he said, "you can't beat me," I think. I might be wrong, but that's all I could think of.

"I'm filled with Scotch, bitterness, and impure thoughts!"
