How does this compare to the short story?

Is there a huge difference?

If you want to read the book or haven't seen the movie yet, read no further. This reply lists details about both the movie and the short story it comes from.

The short story is quite short (14 pages, 15 minutes to read). The "heart and soul" of the short story is the same as the movie, but there are some very major differences.

- In the short story, it is Inge who died and Olaf who is remembering her. The short story is told from Olaf's point of view.
- The major plot element in the short story is that Olaf wants to bury Inge on the farm, but the local sheriff won't allow it. (The sheriff has known Olaf for years and is sympathetic, but has to uphold the law.)
- The Frandsen character does not exist, nor does the preacher. There is no farm auction and no problems with the harvest.
- Olaf was well aware ahead of time that Inge was German - it was Olaf's parents in Norway who arranged the marriage.
- Olaf and Inge never have a wedding ceremony - Inge decides that enough is enough, and she considers herself to be married. She consummates the relationship in the hayloft, rather than in the house. They just continue to live together thereafter with a common-law marriage.
