Unrealistic?

Perhaps it's just me projecting too much onto the film based on the image of Nordic countries but the story felt unrealistic to me in the sense that the lead character's sexuality would be so problematic for such a wide array of characters (across different classes, etc) in the film.

I get the general homophobia in sports concept and wouldn't think this was limited to places outside Northern Europe, but in general it seemed as though the characterizations belied the image of social tolerance I would reckon most people associate with Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, etc (and, yes, I'm aware that the countries have significant differences and that generally Sweden, Denmark and Norway alone are considered Scandinavia "proper")

Am I mistaken?

as much as I enjoyed it I thought it could have been so much better scripted in general
