Columbia Disaster

As a hardcore space buff, I was kinda shocked to see a recreation of the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy (under the name Patriot), and the re-use of news coverage from the Columbia aftermath.
Does anybody else feel that was in poor taste?
It really dredged up some old emotions in me.

The movie is supposed to be surreal and realistic. Using news footage of an actual disaster adds to that.

You're thinking about what's best for the movie, a fictional story. Ever considered what would be best for the families of the real human beings who died that day? Using the dead to boost a scene in a movie is the height of poor taste.

reply

Indeed it was. Note that I'm posting this on the 23rd anniversery of the Challenger Accident. The first thing I noticed was that they were using stock footage of the Columbia break up. I did bother this space program fan a lot.

reply

I agree, I think that was in poor taste and I'm sure the family members of the Columbia crew probably didn't appreciate their grief being used for a bad movie.

reply

I'm surprised to find out they used the real footage. It would've been easy enough to fake. In their defence though, it's no different to the way other films use stock footage of storms/volcanoes/disasters/burning cities/floods/riots/etc. where no doubt people often died during the events being filmed. How many times have we seen the guy in front of the tank, in tiananmen square?

I'm presuming the footage of people being interviewed after the crash wasn't real, from the Columbia disaster as well? Or was it?

Time enough for the earth in the grave!

reply

nope that was the film obviously

Why...So..Serious? Let's put a smile on that face of yours!

reply

There are other films that also used the Columbia disasters footage, such Supenova 2012 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1479847/

reply

no one saw that

"General Rule...

IMDB User says [Enter Movie Here] is Racist = It's Most Likely Not..."

reply

I thought it was in pretty bad taste too.

reply

It was in extremely bad taste and set the wrong tone for the movie. There were other ways to bring the spores to Earth, like a filter that did not get cleaned properly, falling space junk or just an asteroid. We understand using an accident in a movie, such as a plane crash or an extreme weather storm, but there are numerous incidents of most disasters. There is no rational to using a very specific tragedy, when only one shuttle has been destroyed in this manner. To treat it like just another bad day is poor judgment on the writers part.

reply

Yes I was surprised they went that route too, as there are other ways to have brought it onto earth. Perhaps they got permission though?

reply

I really seriously doubt that they got permission from NASA or the family members to use real footage. It was in incredibly bad taste and I think one of the reasons the movie bombed. I started to watch it on cable and the moment I saw the Columbia footage I checked out. I'm glad I didn't give them any of my money when it was in theatres and wouldn't give them a moment of my time when it was on cable. Typical Hollywood narcissism, they think anything they do in the interest of "art" is fine. Even if it's for a cheesy sci-fi remake.

Why is it offensive? Don't they use footage of JFK and many other things in films?

reply

Exactly, filmmakers use real footage of WW2, and war footage of the middle east all the time, and no one is offended.

In the movie Final Destination, they used real footage of a plane crash aftermath. Yet no one complained about it.

God knows how many real life footage of real natural disasters have appeared in recent movies and no one flinches.

But when only 7 people die in a shuttle accident, everyone on IMDB loses their mind.

It should also be noted that it is implied in the movie that the fictional astronauts sacrificed themselves when they knew they were infected.

reply

They do but usually they don't pretend it's something else. They use it for what it really is.

reply

I guess they better not make any more Titanic movies, or someone somewhere is likely to be offended.

and no more WW2 Auschwitz gas chambers with real footage....

and no more Hiroshima footage embedded in any more movies...
