Amanda Bynes is the weakest link

But who could have played Penny instead?

Geronimo

She did fine with the type of character she had to play. The silly sidekick. Leave her alone.

Sure, her acting was fine, but she cannot dance or sing. In a musical!

Geronimo

reply

Neither can Michelle Pfeiffer! She practically had to rap her solo.

reply

No NO! She was in Grease 2 thats another musical so there!

reply

I loved her in this. She was hilarious, and her singing/dancing was fine.

Disagree adamantly. There were plenty of leads in this movie who got the job because of their name, not their talent or their being the best fit for the part but Bynes wasn't one of them. When someone first said, "Hey, let's make a movie out of the musical Hairspray!", the first thing they should have done is call Harvey Fierstein and ask if he wanted to reprise his role and if he said no, that should have been the end to the plans. Scrap it/done.

I think Amanda was a good Penny :)

Me too. :-)

Sorry but I don't agree. Edna is supposed to sound like a woman, not a man who has smoked 100 cigarettes a day for 50 years.

Amanda Bynes was great in the role of Penny!
And what a hottie!

reply

I liked her as Penny, granted her singing wasn't the best but I can over look that seeing as how the character only sang in two songs in the film version. Plus she isn't the only actor who has been casted in a musical who can't sing. Hence Russell Crowe in Les Miserables, Richard Gere in Chicago...

She was excellent.Though I wonder if the costumers and filmmakers weren't going for a 8-12 year old look (this was still the Jack McClellan era-he was that Northwestern-based pervert who ran a "Girl love" site.). with the lollipop and do but a lotta late 50s-early 60s teen girls did too!

Sarah Silverman Is Magic

Amanda Bynes is hot, Lindsay Lohan is not

That was on purpose. By having such a conservative mom, she was kept away from the world. That's why a lot of conservatives look so innocent.

Also, it serves as a contrast. Meeting SEAWEED opened her eyes to a new world. At the end, she dresses and dances like a woman. And a very sexy one!

How true!

I love Amanda's presence in this, her facial expressions and reactions are gold! In mourning for the Bynes that used to grace our screens with her awkward, hilarious facial expressions and natural charm.... very sad that she is totally destroyed now and has retired from acting :(

reply

Not exactly anymore..
