Unintentionally funny moments

I love this movie. Name moments in the movie that had you cracking up but probably weren't meant to. Anybody offended need not comment. I have so many but I'll only write one.

When he's discovered the little fox and he shoos the fly away and says "Not when I'm around!"

Great stuff.

One of my favorite moments in this film that has not been mentioned yet is when they are showing clips of Timothy's life throughout adolescence when he worked on a Pansy Flower Farm. It just seals the whole deal about him being gay. Honestly, how can he not? It just made me crack up after the whole segment on Timothy discussing how it would be easier to be gay.

reply

Totally!!! The montage told all. The pansy farm, that fact that he was A DIVER! Louganis anyone? Hollywood, fake accent, all of it. The evidence is overwhelming.

reply

What does Hollywood and/or a fake accent have to do with being gay?

I love this movie, I find it to be so funny even though it's supposed to be serious. I bought it after I watched it for the first time and I showed it to everyone I work with and my all my friends and the reactions are always the same... laughter and disbelief. I love how the father looks like Eugene Levy, how he grew up on the pansy farm, how Treadwell always looks and sounds like he's been molesting the animals, how crazy the coroner comes off as, how his rodeo rider/pilot friend acts, how crazy the woman who co-ran the bear society (or whatever it was) sounds and how she puts on the watch that they got off the body, how the other pilot and the museum curator they talk to insult Treadwell, how he gets all emotional about tourists throwing rocks at Tabitha or whichever bear it was, the ridiculous names he gives to the bears, his little speeches, how a pile of rocks and a smiley face on a rock get him all upset; basically everytime he says something his voice kills me... great, great movie. (If they had put in the audio from the camcorder, the film as a whole would have had a different effect on me though).

Ah, thanks for listing all that. I was laughing while sitting here remembering it all. Great stuff.

(Plus this thread deserves a bump.)

for me the biggest laugh was (and admittedly i have a dark sense of humour) when herzgog was listening to the tape of the death.

while there are going to be a lot of people who want to hear the tape, herzgog obviously realised it would be in poor taste to feature it. good call. so when he started describing what was going on, i thought it was a bit much. the poor women was in tears hearing it, but he just trundles on not a bother til he eventually cops that's it's too much, she's in bits, and stops. saying 'jeeze, that tape's pretty horrible, you should never listen to it.'

OF COURSE SHE'S NOT GONNA LISTEN TO IT! how long has she had it and not listened to it before you came along, you tool? but then she goes: 'no, i'll never listen to it' and herzgog throws in: 'and while we're on it, you should never look at the photo's i saw in the coronor's office'.

WHAT THE HELL IS HE THINKING???? OF COURSE SHE'S NOT GOING TO GO DOWN TO THE CORONOR'S OFFICE AND ASK FOR PHOTOS OF HER FRIEND WHO DIED SOME TIME AGO IN HORRIBLY GRUSOME CIRCUMSTANCES!!

i couldn't believe he said it. what a tool.

Star post! Had me in stitches much to the annoyance of my cat.
In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer

Yes - this bit!
I think the unintentionally, and enormously darkly funny moment came just after Werner told her to NEVER listen to the tape and she vehemently agrees not to. Then there's a pregnant pause and he adds "And don't look at the autopsy pictures either!"

reply

I was pretty much laughing through the whole thing.

One of my favorite parts was when he thought the bee was dead and got all weepy about it. Then, it flew away. I seriously almost fell off the couch because I was laughing so hard. Hell, just thinking about it has sent me into a giggle fit.

What a great thread. It was hilarious to read the comments about this weird film. Nice that people remembered quotes, there were some fantastic things said in this film.

My favourite scenes were the ones with the singing pilot and the enthusiastic coroner.

The coroner or doctor or whatever he was was really strange and funny. He made most Twin Peaks characters look like normal everyday people.

Then again, so did Timothy. The last Timothy scene with all the F words was hillarious and very dramatic at the same time.

The entire movie.

reply

Yeah, basically everything that's already been said.

Also, when it shows the clip of him diving into the pool when he was in High School, he swings his arms and..skips.. and just looks so flamboyant.
Maybe I'm just looking for every possible thing that could make him gay but.. heh hehhh.

"God I wish I was gay! They have it so easy! Why don't girls wanna stay with me!"

reply

For me, the funniest character wasn't Timothy (who was funny, yet also disurbing and tragic in equal parts)!

It was Herzog himself, whose narration decends into parody as he bombards the viewer with his own opinions, rather than allowing him/her to draw their own conclusions.

Is it wrong to find how he pronounces the word 'bear' (bee-err) funny?

Scenes like when he supposedly ('cos you never know) listens to the audio tape with Treadwell's and his girlfriend's death and then tells T's ex that "You must never, never listen to this tape. You must destroy it" is some of the hammiest melodramatic stuff I've seen in a 'real-life' documentary.

However, Herzog's acting up to the camera (both on-screen and through his narration) mirrors Treadwell's own, and so I've actually found this a fascinating and often overlooked facet to this great film.
