Deserves more then 6.3 surely..

Wow i was surprised to come on here and find the hate directed to this movie, me and my friends saw it the other and quite enjoyed it; maybe people were expecting to much? It is funny, it isn't high class humour or anything but it's still a good laugh deserves more then a 6 imo.

reply

6.3 isn't very low considering the number of comments here panning this movie. I don't see a lot of defences here either. I went over to "The Dinner Game" page, the French movie this was remade from, and there are many fans there who state that they will boycott this remake.

Anyway, this movie rates significantly higher than "Evan Almighty" on IMDB, another Steve Carrell film which I found more enjoyable than this. I don't see a lot of criticism over there, though there was this controversy surrounding its over-sized budget.

reply

Honestly I wasn't expecting anything since I only saw the trailer once or twice but this movie sucked. The jokes were pretty stupid it and I only laughed once or twice. The movie is way too long and starts dragging throughout the middle. The plot is very predictable and well... this movie was a bad choice.

I think this is the lowest movie I've rated that I've seen in a theater. 5/10

reply

Never saw the original, but I thought this movie was pretty funny. I think a lot of it depends on expectations. I went in thinking this movie was going to suck and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't. Taste is subjective; what's funny to you might be stupid to others, and what's stupid to others might be hysterical to you.

reply

hating or boycotting remakes is the trendy thing to do though, add the fact people who boycott a movie won't see it i don't think most people take it into account rating this movie, well they shouldn't at least

Just gave this a very high score.

I thought the writing was done incredibly well. Jokes were rolling continuously. I couldn't stop crying with laughter throughout a lot of the movie and on a plane, that can be kind of embarassing.

Steve Carrel was superb and delivered lines and subtle humour flawlessly.

My favourite moment has to be in the tax office when Thurman discovered Tim's illegal deductions. I could not stop laughing.

reply

I agree thurman was awesome. It's the type of character that could've easily been flat but the writing and acting were both solid.

reply

High Score.

Plot was very strong, had minute themes, like all the sex jokes boiling down to the inferiority theme.

Characters were great, basically there were real world characters like Tim and and the office guys vs Steve Carrel and the Schmucks including the Swiss guy. Range of characters had a funny contrast.

Personally the best undertone jokes include Office Space jokes, movie opening up with the stapler joke. When I was watching this I said to my friend this reminded me of Requiem for a Dream, but funny. The next thing you know the Swiss guys says "Nothing funnier than watching a bunch of idiots humiliate themselves". Sums up the movie.

Pretty funny.

Yes, I really enjoyed the movie after he showed up.

Oh lord... please PLEASE tell me that was sarcasm.

Just watched Dinner for Schmucks and thought it was an all right film myself I gave it a 6 out of 10.

No way this movie doesn't even deserve 5. The jokes were so childish that it was hard to watch. Not to mention the crappy acting and plot. The jokes were so far fetched that I almost could watch it to the end. Not to mention how predictable this was.

reply

This was easily one of the worst films I have ever seen. I've never been so bored- I wasn't even disgusted, I was just falling asleep throughout.

Totally agree, couldn't watch it too painful...

We went in with low expectations and found ourselves laughing out loud... more than a few chuckles. We enjoyed the gifted actors work and caught several subtle jokes. I was impressed with a cast gathered from a whole world of comedy, performing as believable American characters. We enjoyed the French original, we enjoyed the American remake. Once in a great while, the remake eclipses the original. The humor tended to be less rude than typical Hollywood. The language tended to be kinder and gentler than most popular "comedies". Perhaps those viewers with low self esteem are repulsed by a movie that doesn't reflect their personal unhappiness and self loathing. I give it at least a seven or eight.

This movie played in a cinema on a packed ferry recently, and to pass the journey I went to see it. What amazed me was a young couple watching it were in hysterics at every movement, every word, every facial expression, whereas the rest of the audience were in stoned silence. The funniest thing about it was the rest of the
audience looking round at these two and trying to figure, what the f*&@ they were laughing at - it was desperately unfunny! The worst I've seen in years

reply

Stoned silence?

What were they smokin'?

reply

This really is a terrible movie. The management of the scenes and transitions from scene to scene are about as bad as any movie I've ever seen. Just a bunch of unfunny scenes thrown together to make a movie. The ideas could be funny if directed with any skill but alas...crap. If you want to see silly done right, do yourself a favor and check out Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

reply

Personally I gave it a 4/10. By far the worst movie I've seen Carell star in. I don't think I laughed even once while watching this.

reply

Yes it does. And don't call me Shirley.

reply

I don't see that anyone said "surely" (unless I missed it) so I can assume this is a The Office reference.

The knack to flying lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

reply

It's in the title of the thread, and the line is a reference to the movie Airplane.

"I will not succumb to temptation, unless she's cute."

reply

I missed the title (my bad) & I know it's orignally from Airplane! but in The Office, he uses it a lot when it makes no sense. And since I didn't see the title (again, my bad), I assumed that's what you were going for. It's a giant *beep*-up on my behalf.

No worries. It happens to the best of us at times.

I really enjoyed this movie. I'd give it atleast a 7.

Harmless, silly fun that had me laughing out loud several times and left me smiling at the end.

reply

Me too.
The parts that made me actually LOL were the parts involving that pretentious artist

reply

You must be kidding. This movie doesn't deserve to be rated anything higher than a 3. The characters are completely overdone and the script/storyline is completely flat. This is what happens when someone has enough money to finance bad ideas.

reply

i gave it 8 but i rarely see good new films get more than a 6 on here

reply

I think the rating is appropriate, and I gave it a 6... I'm a huge fan of Paul Rudd but this just seemed to fall flat. I laughed in a few scenes (and I really liked Zach Galifianakis' character) but overall I thought it dragged and relied too much on slapstick humor that wasn't very humorous.

The French original movie is one of the funniest comedy of all time, with clever jokes. The american version uses part of the plot e makes a bad movie, with cliché jokes, circus humor and unrealistic characters.
By the way, I am not French and I did saw The Dinner Game in 2000.
Why doesn´t most of the people in USA see non-american movies if the language is not english ... You don´t know how many great movies you are missing, because some remakes are awfull (like Dinner For Smucks)
