People who think this movie isn't connected to the orginal please read

You are all idiots. This movie is the first half of the book Carlito's Way. They are planning on making another movie covering the second half. The author of the book Carlito's Way and After Hours (the name of the book for the original Carlito's Way movie)approves of this movie.

Lol really? This movie sucks, if or if it isn't connected. Its still bad. You are an idiot.

For the Idiot that can't count. If Rise takes place in the Fall of '69 and the original takes place in summer of 1975 with Carlito getting out of jail after spending 5 years in jail. That only leaves about 3 - 4 months for Carlito to go to the Caribbean, realize that he wants to go back to NYC. Fall in love with Gail, do all the stuff reference in the original and books. Go to trail and get sentenced.

Hmmm...Yeah, you're the idiot.

As mention before the Original was based on “After Hours” and part of “Carlito’s Way”. Rise to Power was taken from the first book “Carlito's Way”. The screen writers for both movies took liberties with the script. What pisses people off about Rise was that the producers marketed the movies as a direct prequel to the original movie. If it’s going to try and ride the coattail of the original then it will have to suffer the criticisms.

Of course the author is happy with the second movie, he got a huge pack check for it due to the success of the first and is now getting a third check for the up coming third movies. He’d be an idiot not to go along with everything. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

I just read the novelization of Carlito's Way and I can see why the movie went the direction it did. Reason being, Carlito's Way (the book) starts off from his childhood and ends when he's in his thirties or so. I think what the producers did was just take one part of the book (his life in the late sixties) and use some of the minor characters (ie Big Jeff and Little Jeff, Leticia, etc) along with characters created for the movie (Artie Sr and Artie Jr, Hollywood Nicky, etc) in order to do a condensed version of the adaptation while remaining faithful to the source material.

I agree that the year is off for the later half of Carlito's life (After Hours) but I think a large part of this had to do with budget they had to work with for this movie.

Other than that, Rocco and Earl are brothers to Carlito in the book. Reggie's just as irksome in the book as he is in the movie and Nacho Reyes is just as wild.

I watched the original the other day and I noticed something I never did before, at the beginning in court Carlito mentions how he wound up in prison prior to the beginning of the film. According to Carlito he was put behind bars for illegal wiretaps, making it sound to me like he was set up. Norwalk all through the movie appeared to have an obvious grudge against Carlito, which may have been something out of the books (Never read them). Maybe in the space between Rise to Power and the original, Carlito returns to New York and is trying to end all his ties with the underworld but still commiting crimes because it's what he's always known when he's put behind bars in a wrong time, wrong place scenario. Not only that, a lot of people know he was responsible for killing made people, I'm sure somebody's going to chase him to paradise and make quick work of Leticia. Maybe, but maybe not. I should really read the book.

why do u think it has to stop following him when he goes to prison for 5 years? i didnt like this movie either but i would much rather watch the 3 or 4 months he comes home from paradise and then the 5 years he goes to prison...that could be a good movie...they should take it seriously this time

I read the book. Granted, it was a while ago, but this film bears little resemblance to what i remember of it. The first book is mostly about a ruthless small-time crook who plays all sides. He eventually gets into a tough situation (looking like he's about to go to jail), and there the book ends.

There are also too many things in the film (not the book) which don't fit with the reality of the crime world . 'Hollywood Nicky' appears in the film to be a genuine rival of the Italians. In reality Nicky Barnes got his heroin from the Italians to sell to his own people. Edwin Torres knew that.
