Saw the movie last night...

The movie was tight. Stayed after the movie for a half-hour and answered questions / gave commentary. The guy who played young Carlito was very convincing. He had the voice and the swagger... he was a little baby-faced for the role but I could see how he could become Pacino's Carlito over time. He wasn't cold-hearted like I would have imagined -- he maintained the "heart" that older Carlito had as if that "heart" wasn't a result of getting old -- it was just in him. Mario Van Peebles and Luis Guzman were good too. Luis was slightly over-the-top, teetering on buffoonery... he had some words of wisdom for Carlito that eventually came true in the original. The movie was much more light-hearted than I would have imagined. I laughed out loud more than I thought I would've. The movie was still in it's "rough cut" form, changes will be made. The soundtrack was off the hook. I'll definitely get it whenever it comes out. Great sex scene too. Nowhere near Oscar-worthy, but not a waste of time either. P. Diddy had a couple great scenes but he had one terrible scene that nearly everyone in the theater thought was wack. It's gonna be hard for him to ever be taken seriously as an actor because of his media overexposure in other genres. I'd give the movie a B- in its current form, with the potential for a B+ if they iron out a few inconsistencies. The ending of the movie doesn't match up with the beginning of the original.

I was also part of the 30min group who asked questions,in 84th street theater.

For starters the movie had some good performances by Jay Hernandez, Mario Van Peeples, and Luis Guzman , but I felt that the film was not constitant to the original. In my opinion the original had, more suspense (De palma's Hitchcockian trait)and was more grittier. The cinemotagraphy was lacking , giving all the subjects a sharpness that did not feel like you were in the 70s, like goodfellas softness in tone ,or gritty like Dead Presidents amber hue. Some times the cinematography felt like parts of the original, other scenes felt like a made for t.v movie.

Carlitos Way RTP was more than a caper movie ala Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Layer Cake,(which is better executed) than a crime thriller. Which is not a bad thing, but takes away from the poetic feel of the narration that gave this movie its edge.
violence was a little toned down as well.

My opinion not a bad movie but far from good, wait for dvd.

I saw this movie on dvd last night and it's nothing to write home about. It could very well be a totally different movie itself. No one was believable to me. Sean Combs can't act worth a damn. Jay Henandez did a mediocre job as Carlito and the ending didn't coincide with the begining of the original movie. Which is one of my favorites I might add.

WEAK WEAK WEAK-where do I begin. I saw it the other night. The direction was awful-this should've been set in the late 50's to mid 60's but it was in the early 70's where the pacino version was late 70's...HE AGED THAT QUICK??? The only good thing about the film was Luiz Guzman and surprisngly, Diddy. For some reason I liked watching him, his monologue was corny but hey what can you do. Jay was pretty good too, if he had better material he would've been better. None of the characters from the first movie was there...what kind of prequel is this? BORING and too mushy mushy-this was suppose to be, or should've been, like Scarface.

Carlitos rise to power had a test screening in augest in NYC.

Both the characters and the plot are inconsistant with the CW1...However the "prequel" adds a bit of historic reference with Sean "Diddy" Combs playing Leroy "Hollywood Nicky" Barnes a notorious Harlem drug kingpin.

i hav just finished watching the movie and want to know why they did the movie as they did (mainly story wise). i knew it wouldn't b as good as the original and tried not to watch it critically. i thought it was "OK" compared to some prequels i've seen but why doesn't the story match up to the original.
Is this to meen there will be another film?
There were references to characters from the original like "clyde" who i assume is the 1 who "gets out the joint" in the original and writes to carlito about renting cars. We also get a name check of Sasso and him owning the club in this 1. But why didn't they make a REAL prequel one that acturally has characters like "Gale", "Petey", "Lalin" and all the others that knew Carlito before he was locked up.
Instead they made a movie (that wasn't as bad as expected) and did a story with a totally different bird, an ending that questions reason like "WHY THE *beep* IS HE IN PARADISE" i mean that was his dream in the original. you can't do a story with different people, put "Pachanga" in playing sum1 else, throw in a crime caper ending, and put him in paradise when all he's gona do is end up bak in New York, meet gale, get locked up and cum out in the original.
THERE'S JUS NO *beep* LOGIC!!!
the more i wrote this the more i began to hate the movie.

This movie is a good movie. If the lead character hadn't been named Carlito noone would have complained about this movie, its a good standalone flick. The only reason they named it Carlito's Way Rise to the Top is to suck people in to watch it. As far as it not matching up, who's to say Carlito didn't get that hustla's itch and go back to New York then he met Gail and Klienwhateva. L8ter H8ters.
