Austin de Besche is the senior Director of Photography for PFB and he's often the guy behind the camera. From production to production things change slightly but the producer, the camera person and the sound person generally engage the kids. Sometimes just the camera person speaks, to keep from confusing anybody, but sometimes we all do! The person who does Buster's voice is not with us on location. Hope that clears it up for you.

So, how do you maintain consistency, meaning, how do you get all the people that "Buster" meets to address him as Buster and interact with him as such? Do you prep them beforehand? Do you hire actors who play the roles of random passersby who seem to "meet" Buster for the first time on the spot? Or do you have a mix between hired actors and the real people whose lives we visit throughout the episode? I mean, some of it you could control by hiring actors or getting the people to say certain things, but so much of the individual families, cultures, events, and other things featured on the show you can't fake, you know?

And when Buster participates and the people he's visiting say something like, "Good job, Buster!" is that really the DP who's trying the activity?

I've been so curious about the show for such a long time! I enjoy it greatly, even though I AM a "grown up." :-)

We go in with a general plan and talk it over with the kids. There are some targets we have to hit educationally, and to move the story along. We try not to rehearse much or do many takes, so its fresh and authentic. We don't hire actors, they're all real people involved in the story.

Yes, the DP is on swings, and rope bridges and going through tunnels, etc.
