Annoying from a hispanic point of view

Damn, nothing gets me more on my nerves than the same latino stereotypes, plus a bunch of cartoon characters speaking english and spanish at the same time.

reply

Call the whabulance! 9 wha wha! Who cares if all we have on TV is the likes of Friends or The Class? Whitey rules! We don't need shows that feature Latinos! To hell with them.

reply

I'm being scarcastic btw.

reply

I agree. It makes me so mad. Once when I was watching this show, one of the kids said a whole phrase in Spanish. It got on my nerves so much I just yelled at the TV: "SPEAK ENGLISH, YOU IDIOT!"

I hate this show. I wish the kids would just speak English.

reply

i know! Do we HAVE to have another show where the
kids speak Spanish and English? I think not.

It's the same thing with our toys! Why do we have an
English setting AND a Spanish setting?

And i also find it funny, how there's only one
white kid and the rest are Spanish.

reply

That's not true Chrissy and Theo are black, and Maggie is Chinese(like me!). Maya, Miguel, and their family are like the main theme for the show and happen to be hispanic, is that so wrong?

reply

Which one is Chrissy? And there's nothing wrong with it, I'm just
tired of having Hispanic "culture" shoved down our throats everywhere we turn.

reply

Chrissy is the one with the pink sweater and yellow headband. And this is just one show, 21 minets out of the 1440 each day. Is that so wrong? Compared to all the white "culture" that gets shoved down everyone's throats all the time.

Not just one show. Not just TV.

I'll list a few:

-We have to Dial 1 for English

-All the hispanic shows that are constantly on TV.

Maya and Miguel,
George Lopez
Dora the Explorer
The Brothers Garcia

- Our toys are in Spanish AND English

-and the Dominant language of Miami is Spanish

And what do you mean "white culture"? That's basically
what most of America's culture was founded upon. Then
we became a "melting pot". But it's not much of a "melting pot"
anymore.

reply

Your proud of being white, right? Well I'm proud of being hispanic and asian. I grew up in a very white area, and I definatly knew I was not like everyone else and that it's okay. The hispanic population is one of the fast growing facets of our country and alot are immagrints who might not be that comfortable speaking english. Big corparations are just trying to cash in and deal with two similar markets at once. I don't want to start a whole race debate, but I like that not every show has the friends syndrome. Other cultures are out there and if it really bothers you that much you can always change the channel.

"She's not THAT Mexican mom, she's MY Mexican"-GOB

reply

Just WHY do you assume I'm white?

immagrints who might not be that comfortable speaking english.

So, because they're not comfortable speaking
English, they shouldn't speak it at all?

but I like that not every show has the friends syndrome

...what?

Other cultures are out there and if it really bothers you that much you can always change the channel.

You are missing my point. It's NOT just Television anymore.
And if other cultures are out there, why don't we do
anything to cater to their needs as well?

reply

I'm sorry for assuming that you are white. This is an educational children's show, like sesame street, and like sesame street it helps teach language skills and diversity to children. Do you know how many old polish people live around me that don't speak english? They aren't comfortable doing it and/or in some cases just refuse and act like they are still in Poland. The friends syndrome is where a show has an all white cast with very little ethnicity ever being shown. Three of the characters are jewish, yet they are shown celebrating christmas alot. I know you're not talking about just telivision, and we are starting to cater to the needs of other cultures. but baby steps, Do you know how long it took to end racial segragation in this country, and gay marriage just became legal in it's second state. Things take time so just try to go with the flow, but if it really bothers you, you should go to your local government officials office ane tell him about you concerns. Again, I apoligize for assuming you are white, and also if I read to much into your post(I have a tendancy to do that).

reply

sorry, I haven't been to this board for a while.

I know this is late, but it's okay to assume that I'm white. I'm half-white actually.

I think I should apologize for shooting off my mouth. I have a tendancy to do that. and I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

"I'm just

As sick as the rest of the world is of American culture being shoved down theirs?

I happened to watch part of an episode this morning and it really annoyed me that Maya speaks Spanish with a very strong American accent. I briefly thought it was because her character was born in the U.S., but her twin has a perfect accent! It's disappointing that PBS is producing a program with such low quality multiculturalism.
