Season 2

Season 2 has just started in the UK and I must say that the way Channel 5 are advertising this (ie not at all) is ridiculous. As a result I missed the first episode last week. That was supposed to be repeated on Sunday at 11 pm, but although their website said it would be shown, Five Life closed at 11.

Anyway, can someone explain to me what happened in the first episode? I watched the second episode yesterday and think that stuff must have happened that I missed. Why did Tom say to Frankie that they had broken up? I didn't know they were an item to start with. Who is his nasty new girlfriend? It might be that these developments just happened in the interim between Seasons 1 and 2, but if there was an explanation in the first episode, can someone tell me please?

reply

It wasn't really explained it must have happened between seasons, Frankie came back from overseas to find there was no room for her at the house coz Tom's housemate and girlfriend was still there. Frankie went to the house and told Tom she wanted to move back in coz it's her house and he was raving on about how she broke up with him (apprently they were engaged). I think it had been a few months since the season finale. Charlie and Julia are also broken up. Hmmm....you probably don't understand my rambling, but hope it helped! :)

Thanks Aussie girl, this is great! I am really surprised that Frankie and Tom were engaged, I assume that was in the interim between the first and second seasons. Claudia Karvan is a lucky woman to get all these brilliant actors to work with - Vince Colosimo, Sam Worthington, Brendan Cowell and my favourite Ben Mendelsohn. I cannot wait for his appearance in LMW. He is one of the most underrated actors around.

season 2 and 3 have already aired over here(australia)

ben mendehlsons character in love my way annoyed me so much. I just did not like Lewis and i hated his son, Dylan, although he became more likable towards the end of the 3rd season.

I hated Julia to begin with in the first season but she became my favourite character in season 3. she's so complex and beautiful. asher keddie does a marvelous job.

frankie is wonderful. she is my favourite character. i just love everything about her. shes amazing.

the worst character, by far, is di. i cannot stand di. i dont know if its just the actress who plays her but every scene she's in is ruined for me because of her patronising and conceited tones. she was such a bad mother to frankie in the first and second seasons. and so irresponsible. but i also cant stand the actress who plays her so that probably contributes to my hatred of di.

but i love this show. so much. i know its over now and there wont be a fourth season, which is so sad.

Oh Kix.... say it ain't so!!!! Already finished, eh? I guess sometimes that's a good thing, but this show is so fantastic, it's one of those that you wish would go on forever.

To be honest, I am not that fond of Julia. We are only on the second show of the second series here in the UK - Julia just got arrested for shoplifting - and she comes across as a bit self-absorbed. The acting is top notch though.

I don't particularly like Dan Wyllie's character either, I don't know how he could attract all these women. He really has got nothing going for him.

Di, as you say, takes the biscuit. She really gets on my nerves. I think I didn't like her because of her affair with the married guy in the first season and how that played out. And as you say, she is a terrible mother.

My favourite is Tom. I just love this character, doesn't hurt that Brendan Cowell is cute. He reminds me of Grant McLennan. There is so much going on with the character, and the actor is always interesting to watch.

Claudia Karvan, to be perfectly honest, I have only ever seen in The Secret Life of us, and Alex was a pretty similar character, so I can't say how versatile she is. Her portrayal of a grieving mother is so convincing though, like other people have said, it was gut wrenching to watch and I wept buckets.

Sorry for rambling. Nobody I know over here watches this show and I haven't been able to talk about it at all.

It's a shame that you don't like the Mendelsohn character. He doesn't often play likeable characters though, does he? Frankie sure does pick 'em.

Charlie totally won me over in season 2 :)

i have not seen season 2 as yet, but i am a fan of him anyway!!

Yeah Lewis(mendehlsons character) has some redeeming qualities but mostly i just find him sleazy and selfish. He started off okay but then as you get to know the character more, he becomes less likable..as i'm sure you will see.

I felt the same way about julia as you do in season 1 but in season 3, her sister comes into the show and you start to see why she is like she is. But i started to like julia more in season 2 because ALOT of stuff happens to her in season 2 and she goes through a really bad time.

i dont know why you dont like dan wyllies character. i love charlie. hes a great guy! i think he and julia are a terrible match though.

before lou died, i didnt particularly like frankie, but in season 2 and particularly season 3, you start to see what a wonderful person she is and how caring she is.

di, however, never redeems herself and continues to be a horrible waste of screen time throughout both seasons. in season 3, her patronising and selfish ways become worse, but she appears in less episodes, which is good. and i agree, the way she acted when she had that affair in season 1 makes u realise how horrible she really is.

and i agree, tom is great, but he becomes a bit mean in season 3.

at the end of season 3, everything seemed to wrap up in the final episode, and it gave you the impression that that was it, and there wasnt going to be anymore seasons. but i still think there should be because nothing really got resolved for a few of the characters.

it will be interesting to see how you feel about the characters after you have watched season 2 and 3.

Oh, I don't like Charlie because he is just such an A*sehole to everyone, particularly his dad. I don't know if what happened between them becomes clearer as the series goes on. I don't really see that he has any redeeming qualities.

I assume Tom becomes mean because he is back on the drugs. Again, it'll be interesting to see how Brendan Cowell pulls that off. I can't wait.

I've liked Frankie from the beginning, she seems like a lost soul drifting around and with only Lou as her anchor.

Incidentally, I watched a film called Cosi at the weekend and Mendelsohn was lovely in that.

Not to my knowledge, I was referring to Secret Life of us.

What time is it on in the UK and what channel???? Can't find it

It's on Five Life which is a Freeview channel. It's on Mondays at 9pm. I don't know if there are repeats.

Yesterday's episode was amazing, the best one of this Series so far (Di left Australia, Julia gatecrashed Steven's party etc.) The relationship between Tom and Frankie is so interesting, my heart broke for him when she turned him down.

Ben M. put in his first appearance, but he didn't do much yet.

I am about in the middle of Season 2.

I borrow the DVD's from my video shop and I've been sort of leaving gaps between borrowings because I don't want to gobble them all up too fast! It's like one of those fabulous books that you just can't put down. Even though you're rushing to the end you wish it would go on and on and then later you just keep missing the characters and wondering how they are. It's like the sort of loneliness after you've just met and spent a lot of time with a great group of people on a holiday and then you go back to your own separate lives.

Last night I couldn't help myself and watched 4 episodes in a row. That wasn't a great idea. It's all too emotion wrenching and gave me terrible insomnia.

Lewis is still pretty sweet in what I have seen so far and I'm not really looking forward to him getting icky coz I really like Ben Mendehlson! And I don't want to see Frankie getting hurt?!

Wow, so it was the last episode in the UK last night. I disagree with some of the comments above. I thought neither Tom nor Lewis were nasty. Poor Tom, he really got pummelled this season. I don't like Katie at all and hope he finds his way. I didn't like Dylan either, the actor who plays him deserves an award, he really is creepy.

Am I missing something or are Frankie and Lewis supposed to be siblings? Why is she ignoring that? I hope it doesn't come back to bite her when the baby is born.

reply

I liked Katie, what happened to her after S3? She was only in one episode right?

Tom became an ass this season, why? I know emotionally he is all over the place. I guess it is part how real this show is. They can pick up plots and deal with them in such a human way. I remember when it first came out they said they wanted to challenge the viewer and get us to even hate the characters some times. Humans aren't always perfect and this show did a wonderful job of showing us that.

And Tom and Charlie's dad... he went off the rails. I like to think it was due to the death of his grand daughter but it seemed quite abrupt. Any explanation for this?

And Lou he changed and became a grump. I guess the honey moon period wore off with him and Franky and reality set it. I loved how they patched things up in the end and how all lovably mad and real they are.
