Sledgehammer anyone?

*Spoiler alert*

Firstly, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed Funland. Wonderfully twisted dark comedy. However.....
Did anyone else find the whole search-for-the-key to be massively contrived? During the final scenes we discover the much sought after key is used to open a small brick covered safe. In all honesty, how difficult would it be to open something like this? A woman like Mercy Woolf, with most of Blackpool under her thumb, could surely find the number of a good locksmith. OK, so without the key we have nothing to drive the plot, but such a ridiculous situation put a downer on an otherwise first rate series for me.

Perhaps someone could point out if I'm missing something here.

I think the point was that Mercy didn't know where "the thing" was hidden, not that she needed a key. If you remember she asks Carter what Franny had given him (i.e. she didn't know it was a key) and she sent her hitmen to "look for Bridewell" not for a key.
