My review of Feast...

***SPOILERS***

I watched Feast for the first time yesterday, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it with little criticism. I knew going into the movie that I shouldn't take it too seriously and rightfully so. This is definitely not straight-up horror, so if you're more of a serious horror fan, Feast probably isn't for you.

IMDB categorizes Feast as a Horror/Action/Comedy. While mostly marketed as a horror flick, the film heavily parodies action flicks as well. The film presents more than a handful of action and horror clichés that are common in the genres to create a slick tongue-in-cheek gorefest. By presenting the cliché and then completely breaking it in some outlandishly humorous way (e.g. the “Hero” shows up and gives his “I’m here to save the day” speech only to be immediately pulled through a window and devoured), the film successfully pulls off the parody genre. If that isn’t enough to convince you, the writer goes to the extent of nicknaming all the characters according to the cliché they represent (“Tuffy” the petite but tough-as-nails female character, “Coach” the motivational strategic thinker, “Bozo” the egotistical dumbass, ect). This goes to show the writer definitely knows his genre archetypes.

As a comedy, the film goes over-the-top with projectile blood baths, poisonous green vomit, orifice filled maggots, and other gory sights that will have you squirming in your seat (much like the campy humor of Evil Dead 2). Along with being riddled with laughably cheesy blood and gut scenes, the film gives the audience some very memorable laugh-out-loud quotes like, “The monster’s cock is stuck in the door!”

The film is meant to be fun and entertaining, which it does with much success. The only criticism I have is how some of the characters overshadowed others. I felt like Grandma could have been developed into more of a stand-out character. Her character had some of the more humorous dialogue from the film. The few scenes she was in were some of my favorites. Overall, I would give the film a 7/10 and would recommend to any horror fan.
