Born-Again Christian rants against DMC

I'm not trying offend any Christians or Catholics. Everyone has a right to beleive in whatever they want and I respect that but...

A year ago, when I first played DMC 3, my brother-in-law visted my family from out of state. He was watching my cousins and I as we played mission 15 for the first time. In the beginning of that stage dante has his first encounter with the Fallen (twisted angels).

We did not read the enmemy files at this point so we had no idea who the Fallen were. My neice kept shouting "An angel...a friggin angel!" She's getting her butt whooped by the fallen so I tell her to Devil Trigger.

At that point my brother-in-law gets really pissed off and starts asking me questions about DMC like "Where is God?" and "Why are you killing Angels?" We tried explaining to him that most japanese stories don't delve too closely with Heaven/angels and how its mostly demon mythology (or so we think)

We tell him that Dante is half-man, half-demon and he calls it "disgusting" ranting that Demons come from the dark bowels of hell and that humans mating with demons is beastiality. We then tell him that Sparda was a demon knight who saved humanity and he blasts us telling us that Satan's minions have no souls. For the next twenty minutes he kept quoting bible verses about Satan and his plans for humanity.

After watching Dante devil trigger and fight using his guns and swords my brother-in-law tells us that this game promotes devil worship and that it was inspired by satan.

Lol, Years ago, he told us that Resident Evil was made by the devil and that it was brainwashing us into wanting to become flesh-eating satan worshippers. I'm like "Look at the friggin game, we're killing zombies not worshipping with them!"

My brother-in-law just doesn't understand that this is a work of fiction that dabbles in the occult. But it does raise some interesting questions.

If the Fallen were once peaceful angels, then where does Heaven stand in Dante's quest to crush Mundus' minions? What do you guys think about Heaven in the DMC universe?

reply

Heaven plays a small role in DMC. If the angels are fallen why does he complain? Isn't Lucifer a fallen angel himself? Did he complain that you kill the demons that represent the 7 sins? Or the man who is trying to open up the gate to hell?

I'm always right.

reply

He whined about the entire game. He dismissed everything we told him as nonsense. He's very close-minded and refuses to understand the underlying logic in any horror themed work of fiction.

When he visited again I had beaten much of the game and read all the enemy files. I filled him in on Arkham and Dante's struggle to beat the demons and seal the gate to the demon realm but he still wouldn't listen. He still thinks that the game promotes mindless violence in the name of satan. He thinks that DMC is trying to make hell look "cool".

Like I said before, he thinks that Resident Evil is about worshipping Satan. I even recently showed him the cover of the Resident Evil Apocalypse Movie, which has hardly any gore, and he flips out about it. He took one look at Nemesis on the back case and said something like "This is one of those Devil movies, eh?" He refuses to see any science fiction movies of any kind.

Man,he's a real party-pooper whenever my cousins and I have our late night horror movie sleep-overs.

reply

If that's how he acts, I wouldn't waste my time with him.

I'm always right.

reply

There's no point in arguing with him, he's obviously a moron. Church-goers like to rant about how games like DMC and other violence-filled games brainwash us into Satan's minions, but look who's continually spewing this religious propaganda into our faces? Any sort of mass religion is hypocritical in that sense: they warn us of brainwashing, but try and get us to believe that the only thing that's good in the world is their church. Gimme a break, you know?

Tread softly... because you tread on my dreams...

excuse me, i go to church, and i don't rant about stuff like that. harry potter, devil may cry, resident evil? it's only people who are too close-minded to think about what they are ranting against that make everyone look bad. please don't lump all Christians in the same category. we don't all think a little boy saying "hocus pocus!" or a character in a game killing "demons" will lead to people all over the world worshipping satan in massive, blood-and-gore filled orgies. and hell, some of "us" KNOW that there is a LOT wrong with the modern church. so please, don't rant against stereotypes. it doesn't do anyone any good.

reply

Well said, Faerieartist! As a Christian myself, I get VERY tired of narrow-minded idiots with no imaginations, who rant like lunatics against things they don't understand.

Personally, I think the DMC series kicks butt (and would recommend Harry Potter to any kid!). And yes, the guy who rants against DMC obviously wasn't paying attention to the actual story, was he?

I have to admit, I laughed out loud at the idea of RE brainwashing people to BE flesh-eating zombies ("but we're KILLING the zombies!").

reply

wow. He must be very annoying. I have a bible thumper friend who rants about the same crap. It gets very bothersome so I just avoid talking to him for a few weeks then we talk again.

You don't need religion, all you have to do is THINK FOR YOURSELF.

reply

I had that problem too. But,I KINDA thumped him with his own good book.

Moral of the story:
Never leave your bible in close proximity of someone your going to hit with a pillow.

reply

My dad would probably react the same way as your brother-in-law if he saw my playing Devil May Cry. He's really religious. Isn't there a Heaven in the third game? It's all white and stuff. I saw it at my friend's house, who has the game, unless Hell looks like a Heaven..

Me LOVE COOKIES!!!! ::Stuffs face with cookied breaking them into huge crumps;flying everywhere::

reply

Your in-law needs to be reminded that Pride is a deadly sin.

If angels can be bad, why can't demons be good? That's racist of your in-law...or some form of hate, which I'm sure God won't approve of one bit. And God doesn't hate the Devil, He just punished him.

I'm curious as to what this guy thinks of the cross with the serpent wrapped around it.

reply

If his rants ever get more troublesome just remind him that christianity wasn't even an established religion until after paganism. Christmas was a holiday concocted by the new forming church because pagans had a holiday in December and they wanted the transition to be easier so that more people would do it. Christ was actually born around August/September and the wisemen only found him around December three years later. And the reason they have steeples on churches is because that came from paganism. So Christians who put down Paganism are actually hypocrits. Oh and Pagans never worshipped the devil, most of them don't even believe in him. Sorry, I'm rambling... My husband studied to be a Pasture and he is very open minded and believes all good people will be rewarded no matter what religion they follow.

demons mating with humans is bestality? ok then i guess we can all agree on that god mating with the virgin mary was rape since were getting all realistic here.

the whole angel question, the key word fallen implies that they were once angels but now are part of the so called darkside becasue they choose freedom of choice over slavery.

where heaven stands, i dont know. the closest thing to heaven could be earth
or it could all be an equal playing field between heaven and hell were you dont go to heaven judged on how good you are but by how ruthless you are, as both sides strive to get the most ruthless souls for plans of a war like a lottery draw.

reply

rofl thats pretty funny I'm a Christian and I wasnt offended by devil may cry or Resident Evil or whatever, the guy needs to take a chill pill, Angels and Demons may be real but they're obviously not like they are in devil may cry

R.O.D the tv...nuff said

reply

Ummm yeah its funny that you guys respond to Christians bashing your this game by...bashing them. Hmmm anyone see a pattern here. Listen everyone is entitled to their beliefs. Your brother-in-law certainly shouldnt have gone off like that. Obviously he didnt have a good grasp on the whole situation. Theres nothing wrong with fighting fallen angles. Thast what demons (or at least some demons including Satan himself are). I love Devil May Cry and Im a Christian. No I dont agree with some of the things in there but thats not what its about. Frankly Ive always thought of the idea of "good demons" as completley stupid. Its a demon, its bad, thats what they are. IF you dont want them to be bad call them something else but whatever. DMC rocks, God rocks, your brother-in-law doesnt rock, and neither do people who rip apart others beliefs because of stereotypes. I go to a Christian college and you know what everyone says when i play devil may cry. Wow dude, thats freaking sweet! I swear. Also, tell your in law that in the bible there were people who bred with demons (note: fallen angels) and they were called the nephilim!

Smart Catholics=Good.
Smart Catholics=People who realize tyhat DMC has a whole different set of lore from actual religions. Mundus is not satan, Satan isn't in the DMC universe. Just don't talk about DMC near him.
Also, my idea is that Sparda's more an Angel since born Angels can fall, so can't born Demons ascend? He retains demonic form and abilities, but isn't technically a "Demon."
BTW, I'm a Christian and this is one of my favorite game sieries.

reply

I am as Catholic as it gets
Ok?
in fact, many Catholics don't believe what they should or claim they believe....those are called "cafeteria catholics" they pick and choose what they want to believe or not believe
anyways
DMC is NOT devil worship
it shows that anyone can be redeemed and saved
it also shows that good always triumphs over evil
it is fictional though, demons don't really have bodies and they don't multiply
all demons in existance have been there since they rebbelled against God
so Sparda would have to have been one of those originals
anyways, it doesn't matter
FICTIONAL STORY
its fun to pretend that something like that could happen
but its not REAL
reality is reality

reply

actually DMC is devil worship. humans are worshipping sparda, a demon, in DMC4. sparda sired two sons with a human girl. sparda is considered a god, blah blah

but its just a game. i bet all the money in the world nobody started worshipping devils because of DMC

"That Picture Makes Me Look Like a Sociopath"

reply

well obviously those people are stupid and evil
otherwise Dante wouldn't be killing them right?

reply

Stupid moaning Christians!

IT'S....A....GAME!
My family are catholics, all of us, especially my mum, my mum took me to buy it and my dad plays it once in a while! Get a grip people, honestly....

lol! that sure is one fun story to tell the friends. its very rare to find many catholics that act like that, there are some christians that might do that. wow crazy guy

reply

listen people
Catholics have beliefs, MOST of us fully back those beliefs
but harmless fun and games won't condemn your soul

reply

Non-Denominational Christian here.
I love DMC. I love Sci-Fi and many other works of fiction that speak of hell and demons and such. Why? Because I find it interesting, and it's fiction. It's just fiction, it's not evil or anything.

The people that get so worked up over it gives Christian's a bad name, and most of us arn't this loopy.
