I was in this play a couple months ago so i know the show pretty well, So where is the part of the minstrel (my part i might add). And what is with Tracy Ullman as Winnifred!?!?!?!? Im offended!!!!!! why not someone younger and cuter.??? Someone like......the revivals Winnifredd SARAH JESSICA PARKER!! that would have been great!!! Damn This World.....this is not going to be good!!! how depressing
By casting an "older" Winnifred, the plot actually makes more sense (as Prince Dauntless would be older too, thus making his "oppression" seem more realistic). You cannot boil a llama and expect it taste like a grilled monkey
Heys I'm in the play Once Upon a Mattress at my highschool and are show is jan 19-22 its going to rock I'm Princess number 12! I can't wait to see this show! but were the hell is the minstrel! but its awesome that the girl who plays princess # 12 is soo pretty! that rocks!
I am doing the play right now at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, (I'm just a maiden, but my dad is King Sextimus, and my brother is the Jester.)
I've noticed that sometimes they don't put all the characters on the site, but they're still in the movie. I hope that's true in this case because the Minstrel is a magnificent part. I think the Minstrel's too important a part to get rid of, anyway.
**If anyone lives in or near Simi Valley, CA, come check out our production of Once Upon A Mattress, running through March 27 (Fri. and Sat. at 8 pm, Sun. at 2 pm) http://www.simi-arts.org/ for more info.**
They are probably going to use the updated script used for the 1974 televised version, in which the minstrel is replaced by the jester. There was also no wizard (all lines were taken by Sir Studley) and the whole Normandy subplot was cut. I can't wait to see the new television adaptation and I hate that ABC has pushed back the airdate. I hope this project will see the light of day!
I thought Tracey was a wonderfully appropriate Fred. I absolutely dispise Sarah Jessica Parker (not personally...just her acting) and I think she would have been a terrible choice (even though, YES, I know she did it on Broadway.) Tracey and the guy playing Dauntless put forth that desperate quality that both characters needed...and Tracey had just the right touch of silliness and fun.
