Just saw it, thought it was pretty good. The atmosphere and the soundtrack are just great! But... the deus ex machina at the end is unnecessary.
shareWhat deus ex machina are you talking about? There wasn't any in my copy of the film - I just finished watching it, but I noticed that the DVD is 94 minutes as opposed to the runtime of 105 minutes given here on imdb. Any idea what I may have been missing?

The deus ex machina was that at the end the court sentences them to death because : "Due to their behavior, our country lost an excellent botanist, thus they must be punished"
What the hell? People do not get executed in China just because of their homosexuality, this is ridiculous.
Oh, now I see. We disagree about the usage of the term "deus ex machina" who in my book would be an untimely and unexpected saviour.
And what if the two girls were executed because of murder, first of all? That's how I understand the ending.

I enjoyed this movie. It is a tragic love story. There is also domestic violence, if you are looking for excitement.
If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten
