(most of) the user comments on this film = useless

so we get homophobes, angry lesbians and other pointless whingers going out of their way to write crap comments on a mediocre movie. god bless user-defined input, i'm sure siskel is spinning in his grave.

wowee, lookit dem girlies huggin' an' a kissin' each other!

ohhh lookit dem purdy mountains and flowers!

... so it's a boring film made by some nostalgic chinese author who forgot why he left 'the old country' in the first place and his asian-lovin' french lackeys. "me love you long time! two dolla audience pandering!!!"

... and the film is shot in vietnam not china, due to a mixture of factors: cost, chinese government disapproval and pollution - think all those Nike sweatshops are GOOD for the environment? think again.

... finally - the kissing girlies! i'll bet li xiaoran, while a good actress -was probably trying to do the smart thing and pull a bai ling and GET THE *beep* OUTTA CHINA via controversy. nice try though, shame the film was so tame and boring it didn't bring any controversy or a wider release for that matter.

"but it's about love!" nope, it's just pretty girls kissing. deal with it, put it on A-B repeat (like you don't already - i know i do :D)

"it's not chinese!" HA HA i'll see YOU at the plastics factory/rice paddy in the morning. i'm privileged enough to watch this hot lesbian travelogue and not buy into the *beep* - AND YOU CAN TOO. just try it. you won't break anything major.

Hmmm ... but can you tell us what you REALLY think, miss_modular?

reply

So what is it that you are trying to say, exactly?

"I love hitmen. No matter what you do to them, you don't feel bad."

reply

I agree. The characters felt so undeveloped. By the time they were in love, I couldn't understand why, and that sex scene came right out of nowhere. The only thing this movie had going for it was beautiful cinematography.

reply

you redefined missing the point with this post
there's like a hour buildup to the sex scene, it doesn't get more slow paced in any movie!

reply

I can't agree with you.

While there are definite problems with character development and the plot itself, the theme of the movie is clear and it's not about "just pretty girls kissing" at all. It's about something that hurts no one, is no one's business and yet is denied to two decent people. While I am no proponent of gay marriage, the story here is all that matters. The two women simply wanted to be together; to get lost in their own world so to speak while the society they were in, coupled with an overbearing father and sadistic brother/husband made that desire impossible. It's about a love so strong, the couple would chose death rather than separation.

I am sorry the movie didn't meet up with your standards, but then again, that is what art is....a personal experience for those experiencing it. Simply because you found no beauty in it does not mean it is without value. Perhaps you need to look at it from a new perceptive rather than through just anger.

The film is never boring for a minute, and you may have missed one important point: this film shows one of the reasons why Dai Sijie left China in the first place. If you can't see it, watch "Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress" for some help, there's another reason why the director left China which is maybe a little more obvious. (Unless, of course, you prefer spending your time calling user comments useless but writing the most useless one of all yourself.)

huh, i'd completely forgotten that i had written on this board, musta been high on red licorice or something.

despite my rambling post, the point that i was trying to put across was that i found this film disappointing because:

- it lacked well developed characters, consequently...
- it was completely devoid of genuine romance
- and it suffered from poor plotting, leading to viewer confusion and a dissatisfying ending.

it seemed to me that the actresses and the scenery only served to distract the audience from the apparent flaws in this film and as a viewer i felt deceived and ripped off. i can't believe other people bought into it - hence the above rant.

lastly, i don't think that the film would have gotten as much praise as it did
IF:
a) the two actresses were utterly unattractive
b) the setting were somewhere less exotic

it's shallow but it's true.

Add two more to that list, miss_modular, they are terrible at delivering the lines. Their words covey no emotions, bad cast altogether!!!!! And plot holes.

The only thumb-up is the France-Canada collaboration, i.e. beautiful cinematography. Awesome setting and awesome bodies.

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.
