It certainly wasn't the worst version I've ever seen

I have a soft spot for the story, so I give the benefit of the doubt to any movie made about it, for the most part. And while there were aspects of the movie I enjoyed, I likely wouldn't watch it again unless it came on cable here.

I have to say, I think 2001's "The Musketeer" was a lesser film than this one. But, as others have said, the horrible dubbing really hurts this film. Why they just didn't do subtitles is beyond me. I think there were things introduced that we didn't need to see (was it necessary to show Louis getting an enema?UGH). And, while the supernatural aspect of the movie was different, it was also exaggerated to the point of making the movie more about Milady than any of the musketeers, including D'Artagnan.
On the plus side, in the novel, Dumas never explains WHY or HOW Milady was able to escape the rope. And, towards the end, Athos does refer to Milady as "not a woman but a demon from Hell". So, it actually isn't that farfetched that someone wanting to come up with an explanation of how she got out of it, would come up with this movie.
But wouldn't it have been just as good, saying she died and was brought back to life by a passing stranger, leaving us wondering if that stranger was otherworldly? Or that the branch simply broke or the rope broke, before she died? And then, they could have made the movie more traditional but still kept the air of mystery about her.
The book was not about Milady, and none of the movies should be, either. With that said, I did like that this movie kept the spirit of brotherhood between the musketeers. They treated each character like a separate person of equal importance, but showed the deep friendship and caring among the men, which to me is the essence of what the story is about.
So, I can't entirely fault it. But I wouldn't buy it or rent it, nor would I recommend it, really.
