Favourite Nominee

Who is your favourtie Australian of the year nominee/character?

Mine would have to be Ja'mie. Her visit to the detention centre and school presentation was just hilarious.

"Quoth the raven 'Nevermore'"

reply

I actually prefer Nathan and Daniel.

"NATHAN! Nathan, you f aggot! If you turn around in the next five seconds, I'll give you a thousand bucks! -turns back to reporter- See, nothing."

"You wanker! He's wanking! The wank's wanking!"

"NATHAN! Give it here you fag!"

reply

Yeah i like Nathan and Daniel " Nathan Ya fag" and Pat's pretty cool aswell, lol "I've got a gum nut up my nose"

_an iron fisted dictatorship?! weird... i was thinking a picnic_

reply

"Nathan ya fag, get ya f**in gay arse over here, ya hafta f**in talk to her" then to the reporter "see nuthin"

*lol* yeah :) Have you seen the extra Ja'mie videos on the website yet? The one where Ja'mie was debating is a crack up!

"As third speaker, I would like to sum up the reasons why Hillford girls should wear make-up. First of all Alison I would like to rebut what you said. Without make up girls look natural. That’s crap, they don’t. Seriously think about it. When I was in year 7 I had like nine pimples ok. Nine pimples meant that when I was at the station boys thought I was fugly. Seriously without make up I would have looked like a fugly slag. What about Penny? Penny in year 7 has those really serious burns. If she didn’t wear lots of make up she would look so hideous. Seriously once I saw her getting changed in the gym and I saw her bum and its like totally burnt and its really really ugly."

:)

There are some other great videos as well! I hope they are included on the DVD extras.

reply

Ja'mie!! But I love Daniel and Nathan too :)

reply

I like Ricky Wong. Those songs are hilarious! You can win gold.

reply

Yeah I reckon Ricky Wong. The whole idea of 'Indigereedoo' idea is a crack up. It's pretty funny how the aborinal guy walked out during the performance.
Love the show.
Go Ricky!

reply

There's a very amusing video clip on the We Can Be Heroes website with Ricky Wong discussing "the snake show". He used to perform this show in the bath for his sister which featured his penis as the snake. Anyway, as he's talking about it he cracks up but then manages to get back into character.

reply

I love all of em. But I gotta say Ja'mie and Pat. They crack me up. When Ja'mie and her friends were doing the presentation at school and the dance thing... crack up! I also loved where they were talking about how her Sanali(?) had been put in the detention centre - pretty funny.

Pats song about Terry in one of the first episodes was hilarious.

Nah, the best one has to be pat mullins, especially when she got a gum nut up her nose, she had an argument later that night caused by the accident.

leon
guess what? i got to speak to ricky wong on the radio (triple M) this morning, he was so funny, i asked him who he would like to work with when he is acting later in life. he said "Hugh jackman" and he was talking about how much he liked his wolverine character then i suggested that he tried out for wolverine's sidekick in the upcoming movie and he said "Oh my god, don't make me dream!"

reply

lol! I heard Pat today. LoL. That sort of makes me sad now.

reply

Pat died! That sucks. But my favourite is Ja'mie. I think the main reason being is that, probably like most people commenting here, I'm an Aussie. But also, I go to an all girls private school. And the amount of reality that's in Ja'mie's character is amazing. There are so many people in my school that are the exact spitting image of Ja'mie...except they're really girls...and they behave just like her! I mean, they're all these sweet and innocent do gooders in front of people like fellow school mates and teachers but they're really spoilt little bitches....sorry, but that's the only way I can put it! But I loved Daniel and Nathan too. They were really great. I wasn't too fond of Phil though. I think it's just because his character wasn't quite as exciting as the others. I wasn't too fond of Ricky either. I mean, I know when Chris Lilley created this, he wasn't intending to be racist towards Aboriginals, but I think that a lot of people could view it as racist. But in general, I think "We Can Be Heroes" was very well done.

reply

Ricky is my favourite.

But I have a soft spot for Pat, who died. I cried!

And I think Ja'mie is one of the most cutting satirical characters on the show.

Loved this show. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

reply

Ja'mie is my favourite but what is so funny about her is that so many girls are like her. I was watching it the other day and my flat mate came in and said "oh my god, she is [my boyfriends sister's ... I won't say her name] double." And her boyfirends sister is in yr 11 at an all girls school!

--It's funny that people pay $5 for evian, but i guess it is NAIVE spelt backwards!--

reply

i cried as well when pat died and they were interviewing her husband...i love a series which makes me laugh and cry at the same time over a woman who died who is played by a man...the way Lilley inhabits these characters is brilliant...completely convincing...
it's hard to pick a favourite but nathan and daniel probably pip the post just because they are so gloriously vulgar but quite sweet really...
i also love ricky because he really wants to follow his dream but the sad irony is he's just a crap actor
and phil because he is such a moron, so unable to admit his own weaknesses...
and then pat, who started off as my least favourite character because she just seemed to be there for comedy value...and then she died and it was heartbreaking
oh hell they're all brilliant characters...
brilliant show

i think jam'ie is the most clever and amazingly similar parody, coming from an all girls school myself. i think that the funniest character is ricky wong, he says everything with such conviction and he is just so adorable.
that said, i also love pat. shes adorable, especially her collection of dolphins.

"Shop smart. Shop S-Mart."

reply

My favourite is Phil.

Some of his comments are pure gold.

These are some parts that I loved:

"Settle down, settle down." (read from a palmcard after expecting his son to tell the audience about his awards)

The compensation payout scene: "piece of resistance" "what I want to do is rebate it in, chip away at the brickwork so it sits flush" "hoping to whack the centre-speaker on my chair.......its gonna be, whoa, y'know, big sound"

When he asks an Australian Of The Year official "give me the in-for-may-shun"

Asking the scouts what they would do if terrorists came.

reply

Ja'mie is sooo funni!! reminds me of high school!!
Ja'mie:when did you see your first penis? seriously!! Not your dad's......or your dog's!!

reply

i liked pat, i think mostly because pat and terry were so cute together

Jan: I'm sorry all I heard was blah blah blah I'm a dirty tramp.

reply

Definitely Phil Olivetti - I think that he wasn't everyone's favourite character, but if you really watch the way his personality comes through during the series, it is very, very clever - I think that most of us know people who are like this or have shown the same type of characteristics, in one way or another.....one of my favourite quote's of the show is said by Phil - "I laughed at the suggestion when I nominated myself"....also, watching him was kinda like watching David Brent in The Office - mannerism's, etc....you feel embarrassed watching him. Especially, when he keeps calling himself to make sure his phone's are working. Or he is trying to get accepted into the celebrity car racing.....

Brilliant show.....one I'm glad that I purchased on DVD - will definitely continue to watch this.

Phil for me. His deceit, self-importance and cluelessness reminds me of a number of people I know.

I thought this series was absolutely hilarious, but cant see why on earth it turned so serious with Pat getting Cancer and dying. Its a comedy, why have that. Having her die was stupid, kinda like kath or kim, turning serious and killing off one of them. Not funny dude.

reply

Well it was a mockumentary so Chris Lilley wanted there to be a sense of realism to it, which I think is why Pat died. I think it worked really well. All these characters are so real it's no wonder people thought it was a real documentary!

All the characters are fantastic but Ja'mie is definitely my favourite! She cracks me up every time. Did you see her at the ARIA's? She's like "OMG my mum is such a b itch! She was trying to make me go to school tomorrow and I was just like NO WAY!" LOL and she kissed Anthony Callea on the cheek 'coz he is "like, SO hot!" LMFAO! My favourite line (and there are many great Ja'mie lines to choose from!) is probably, "Are you a manager 'cause you so don't sound like a manager. You sound like a dumb-a ss, fat b itch. I'm sorry, you sound SO fat!" HAHAHA gets me every time:D:D:D I also love how she gives a presentation to her school about Global Vision and her and her friends open it up by doing a dance to Cinderalla! LMFAO I mean wtf?! And I love it how she says she thinks everyone in her school are "slack b itches" HA!

This series is brilliant and I think it will be very popular internationally. It is extremely funny and is also realistic with a message behind every single character. Top stuff.

Gordie: "Am I weird?"
Chris: "Yeah, but so what? Everybody's weird".

I hadn't heard of the series, but was lent the dvd by a friend of mine (I'm in NZ) it's wonderful! I especially love Ja'mie's mother 'Jhyll' - is she from South Africa? I also liked Pat's idea about using the rabbit hutch for the dingo cage- and her trying it out - the van they had was great - Pat Mullins Rock 'n' Roll with her image on the side....

...well, fair enough, but I think Stubbs is partly to blame...

reply

You're right, Ja'mie's Mum is from South Africa - there's a bit where Ja'mie refers to her Dad still being over there. I love how Jhyll just lets Ja'mie walk all over her. She was a spot-on North Shore mum - right down to the haircut.

Ja'mie was my favourite, I LOVED the assembly presentation, and the exchange with the call-centre operator:

"You don't sound like a manager, you sound like a dumb-a*$ fat b*tch. I'm sorry, but you sound SO fat!"

I also love Pat and Terry though, especially Terry's looks of quiet concern as Pat talks about the possibility of a dingo attack. That's champagne comedy.

I don't understand the question, and I won't respond to it.

reply

My favourite would have to be Ricky Wong, however I also find Nathan and Daniel hilarious. A... Good bloke. Phil reminds me of David Brent, but I loved his idea for his surround sound system, and yeah, that kidwas a bit of a wuss.

I keep trying out the "They say you can tell by handspan, so you can imagine" line, but no one seems to get it.

reply

Everyone single one of those characters was a pure classic.

Jam`ie and "her" dance LMAO,
Ricky Wong and his preformance LMAO (and he auditoned for home and away 2..he rocks!!!),
Phil cause hes sooooooooo up himself LMAO
Pat cause of the gumnut in her nose LMAo and she dies :( that really made me sad,
Daniel he was soooo funny and hes raps were funny LMAO,
AND BEST OF ALL

Chris Lilley!!!!!
I voted 4 him in the logies!! Go him he is halarious!!!!

reply

As someone who was born and bred on the North Shore and attended an all-girls private school, I f'ing love everything about Ja'mie's character and stories. It is so spot-on it's frightening, hahaha. I most certainly never acted that way myself, but was surrounded my a great number of girls who did.

Too hard to pick a fav...they are all great!!

reply

Yeah Ja'mie is my fave I loved the bit when she found out all her sponsor children were dead and she's on the phone to the charity people telling them why did you give me a village that was a zone for natural diasters or something like that, like they did it on purpose, she's a crack up and the extras on the dvd for her are fantastic also.
Wish she had won, how was she at the ceremony when they were announcing the finalists she got so p****d of cause Sonali was getting all the attention.
And the other one was Phil I love the way he turned up knowing he hadn't been advanced into the finals and made out like he was and then trying to get in to the ceremony what a tool!!!

God sent us an angel from the heavens above and called him Wentworth Miller

reply

My favourite was Ricky. I felt sorry for him that he wanted to persue an acting career because I think nobody would hire him. He very charming in a dorkish way. Ja'mie is one of my favourites also because doesn't really care about people and she just wants to be the centre of attention. It would be terrible if she were a real person and the way she walks all over her mum makes me think how horrible she would be as an adult.

reply

Ja'mie, followed closely by Daniel & Nathan, I haven't laughed so hard in ages

911 Operator: The body's cold?
Buffy: No, my mom! Sh-should I make her warm?

- The Body

reply

Ja'mie without a doubt. She needs her own sitcom, and her three friends were pretty funny too.
Daniel and Nathan were also really cool, and even Phil, despite his annoying arrogance.

reply

DANIEL AND NATHAN!!! all the way!!!

reply

OH GODDD!! Jam'ie. shes just the best character ever....I mean, we all know (knew)that kind of girl! but it is hilarious to see her as a nominee in Australian of the Year...

gotta love this show!

"Why isn't love enough!?"

reply

Yeah, it's Jam'ie for me, the bit where all her sponsored kids die is just pure comedy gold, given the build up. I wonder if other cultures will get it as much as Ockers and Kiwis, really, there's nothing so original I've seen coming out of the US since "All in the family". And for one guy to write and act it, he is a legend alright. Oh the bit where Phil is teaching scouts survival techniques and the tree collapses on the boy and crushes him...it was so embarrasing I couldn't watch !
