Finally, Hines' 'WOTW' Explained And Redeemed ...
According to the Mukilteo Beacon News, the Hines version of WotW was actually the rough cut of the film.
After the original modern-day version was scrapped in 2001 in the wake of 9/11, Hines and crew put together the Victorian version with a low budget and a relatively unknown cast (a few actors from other Hines films were onboard as well). Production wrapped a few weeks before the Spielberg-Cruise-Paramount version went into production.
Distributors were very interested in Hines' product. In fact, the one Hines went with wanted to know if Hines' Pendragon Pictures could shorten the post-production period. And they also wanted to see the rough cut. Hines obliged - and the distributor promptly boxed up the rough cut and distributed that without waiting for the final product.
Needless to say, poor Tim got something of a shafting from both that distributor, and from disgruntled fans, whose comments littered this board for many months afterwards.
That said, it did allow Tim to get his foot in Hollywood's door. 'War of the Worlds: The True Story', the new 'reshoot', if you will, is apparently on tap for possible future broadcast on The History Channel in the US.
Looks like Hines will finally get the respect he should have gotten a decade ago.
