I didn't understand the buffalo scene

A peasant is complaining to Zhou Yu that his buffalo has been stolen. Then Zhou Yu yells at the soldiers "Who did this?" Then his adviser Lu Su says something like "The guilty ones can be detected by the mud on their feet". Then some soldiers are ordered to run through mud. Then a buffalo suddenly appears out of nowhere.

Anybody care to explain any of this?
