I kind of enjoyed the movie. But unlike, say, HERO, RED CLIFF positions itself as a semi-realistic (albeit melodramatic) war movie / historical epic, so I don't understand why John Woo et al felt the need to include so much anti-gravity wire fu in the fight scenes. It feels really out of place here.
shareAgreed. I found myself constantly laughing at the ridiculous superhuman martial prowess of the protagonists - it felt less like a historical epic and more like watching scenes from a Dynasty Warriors videogame.
shareI agree and I actually really liked the film, but I think this detracted from the movie somewhat. Kind of associated with this, I don't think I've ever seen another war movie where the generals individually saw so much action early in the battles.🐭
shareThe source material is Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is itself a fantastical account of a historical period. At least one of its characters (Guan Yu) was deified. Historical accuracy and realism would be unlikely even if it wasn't directed by John Woo. I'll admit that I don't know how this film was marketed but I'd have been.very surprised if there were no wire-fu, over-large explosions, creative cinematography, and disregard to history.
