Do you have to have seen the series to 'get this'

I just watched the first film and can honestly say I just don't get it, it just doesn't grab me as funny.

My question is this, if i go back and watch the series from the beginning will it be more understandable as you get to know the characters, or should I just give up now as it's an acquired taste?

nope. but the show is better. i recommend watching seasons 1-5 over this

I definitely think it would be better to watch the series first, as you would then know more about the characters. The movies are also sadly far from as funny as the series.

Well, to be fair, I had never seen the show at all. I happened to rent the movie and thought it was funny as hell and gets better with repeated viewing.

I'm gonna eventually get the series on DVD cause I think the 3 main characters are funny as hell!

In a word monkeybucket, no. If you watch the series you get a bit more backstory but there isn't so much there that it would impede you from enjoying the movie if you didn't know it. I thought the film was moderately funny (and I saw it before I even knew a TV series existed) and that was enough for me, the series is just more of the same old thing and I couldn't even finish Season 1.
