Insulted!

From The Village Voice:

"I'm sure the pot-laced antics of these trashy dudes are, like, totally hilarious on Canadian TV, but they don't translate well to America or the big screen."

I'm an intelligent Canadian who does sometimes enjoy watching The Trailer Park Boys. But to say that our trash t.v. is worse that that of the U.S. is completely ridiculous! Wow...hmmmm...Jackass anyone???

I just read that article and am blown away by how ignorant and intellectually presumptuous it is. How do some people have the gall to generalize the taste of entire nations? It is simply mind boggling that a prick like that is paid for his baseless opinions.

Besides, TPB is not what I would call trash TV. TV about trashy people =/= trashy TV. Besides, Ricky is all class.

Well, this IS the Village Voice we are talking about! Smarter-than-thou, arts weekly snobbiness, you know the drill. I thought the movie was low-brow like the TV show. In other words, it was exactly what I expected/wanted and it didn't disappoint.

reply

tv about trashy people does make trash tv, but only when its real life people not acting just living their trashy lives (take the show cops for example, lots of trashy people and its trash tv). I actually find the TPB not only to be hysterical but really clever. That critic is a moron, tpb is imo the best mockumentary out there that i've seen anyway. But i guess there are a lot of people that content aside would be very offended just by the use of language in the film, the author probably made up their mind that it was crap in the first ten minutes, never even gave it a chance.

I read that somewhere too; I thought it was a female reporter who wrote that b.s. I'm Canadian and I don't know a single person who doesn't like this show, but from what I've read and heard, a lot of Americans like it too. I don't consider it trashy, at least not any trashier than My Name is Earl, which the yanks seem to love. I don't know, maybe some Americans will always think they do everything better than we do, but people like that aren't to be taken seriously.

"What does being a female reporter have to do with it?"

For crying out loud, it doesn't have anything to do with it. I was only correcting
boscolbk's assumption that it was a guy. As it happens, I'm female myself, and I'm not offended at boscolbk's assumption, I just wanted to clarify it to him/her (no idea which).

What confusion? My comment was posted directly after boscolbk's comment; I didn't imagine anyone would be unable to figure out who I was responding to. From what you wrote, it didn't seem like you were confused at all; what was your issue again? I got the feeling, although you didn't say so, that I was making some sort of anti-woman comment, in the vein of "Oh, damn those women drivers!". Anyway, I don't wish to start a cyber-argument with you over nest views and flat views and anti-woman statements, so if you were confused, sorry about that, and take care.

All I have to say as a "Yank" is that I cannot make it through an episode of "Earl" but go out of my way to TPB any chance I get. Sure, it is a bit more "trashy" so to speak, but it is a lot more funny. I watch a lot of comedy, and I am a hard person to laugh out loud, but I cannot resist laughing at TPB. It has great characters, great joke and great running gags.

I am American and I LOVE the Trailer Park Boys! In fact, having lived in a couple U.S. parks over the years, I assure you that you will find the same sorts of characters wandering about. The translation works just fine but pompous arses will never get it no matter where they hail from.

I'm with Aurelfreq, I'm American and love this show. It's clever and very funny.

I just have to say I am from NY and I love this show!! ... Everyone I have shown this show to are hooked ... its so unique and different from 99% of the crap on tv right now .... keeping my fingers crossed for a season 8

reply

I'm American and I love this show! All of the trailer park stereotypes ring true. I've always thought My Name is Earl owed a lot to TPB, creatively.

Maybe it is deja vu, it sounds like it.

reply

oh be fair... it's a sad state of affairs in cinema when i laugh my ass of consistently through any Jackass movie. I dont know much about Canadian programing but the US is pretty bad... i blame Fox.

Trailor Park Boys translates perfectly if you give it a chance... There is that 50% of America that is boarder line retarded and need everything spoon fed to them but given the benefit of the doubt, that series would kill over here.
