um...no

It was a toss up between V for Vendetta and Block Party last night at Blockbuster. God damn i wish i got Vendetta. This movie put me to sleep. I dont really "appreciate" the artists that were in it and i just thought the whole movie/documentary, whatever it was SUCKED! Im also not black. So i guess i dont have the whole understanding...probably.

reply

If you're not into those artists then why the *beep* did you rent it in the first place?

reply

EXACTLY

the terror alert color has been raised to my hot-pink Manolo Blahniks

reply

I like all these artists and I still thought this was boring. It was totally misrepresented.

reply

This movie wasn't what I expected when I rented it either.

But the raw humanity it showed -- the love for life and community was astounding.
I was pleasantly surprised.

But like the first reply said, if you weren't interested in seeing any of the musicians perform, why did you rent it?

reply

I didnt rent it, i was just here to watch it. It was painful

reply

I am not at all into these artists, but I REALLY enjoyed this doc. I was glad I caught it on tv.

reply

You are a mother *beep* idiot, VanillaMami.

reply

"But the raw humanity it showed -- the love for life and community was astounding. "

Perfectly sums it up. I love most of the artists, but I found the human interaction more interesting than the music for the most part.

reply

Yeah you should probably just stick with mindless action flicks. Like V. I almost fell asleep in V. Block Party had me throwing my hands in the air from my couch.

mindless action film? Block Party was allright, nothing special but V For Vendetta was amazing. I like rap music and many of the artists in Block Party but it really wasn't that great of a comedy.

"Have you ever danced with a refrigerator?"

reply

Well this wasn't meant to be much of a comedy, you'd get that after watching it. And Yes V was amazing, they're both amazing movies

reply

Really, Barshki? That just proves how much of a jackass you are.

reply

I'm not white or British but I somehow managed to love V for Vendetta. So I don't see what being black has to do with enjoying Block Party.

The revolution will now be televised. Sundays on Adult Swim.

I actually thought Block Party was a better film (for what it was) than V for Vendetta (for what it was). V for Vendetta was ok, but it didn't come close to capturing the inspired graphic novel by Alan Moore that it was based on.

Block Party, on the other hand, was a REALLY good concert film, especially considering it was a rap concert, which we don't see represented often in film. Rap is often stereotyped as a genre for cheesy, thuggish, bling bling "artists" with a surefit of macho posturing but little musical integrity. Not the performers in Block Party. The artists featured in this film show raw, unfettered talent and are some of the finest musical visionaries in ANY musical genre.

The artists I already knew and loved didn't disappoint me (Kanye, The Roots, Mos Def, Common, The Fugees). But the performers I was less familiar with also blew me away...especially Erykah Badu and the amazing Jill Scott! The concert was legendary from start to finish and Chapelle's interactions with real people from the community shows him to be a genuinely decent and kind person who cares little about himself but deeply about others.

Everyone who likes rap, Chapelle, or concert films in general MUST see this film...its a classic!!

Gondry is sucking big time.

I also went to see science of sleep and it is the dullest romance with kiddyshow effects.
maybe it's time to hate the French again?esp gondry lameass

reply

woowickerwacker, you need to check yourself. "Gondry is sucking big time" and "gondry lameass" are two of the most laughably incorrect statements of all time. Regardless of whether you appreciated this movie, Gondry is one of the most influential promo directors of all time. You've probably seen his videos without even knowing it, and they're amazing. I laugh at your stupidity. In the words of the french: du merde.

I loved this movie. I too was a bit tricked into thinking it would be a Dave Chappelle stand-up show. My wife is a huge rap & R&B fan, but I am more partial to punk (old school). I was entertained with the reggae riffs, and liked the overall positive attitude. I would have never said it before hand, but I was entertained and found myself enjoying the music and showmanship. A feel-good movie altogether, although I usually prefer movies that leave me feeling bad. Go figure...

reply

yeah, this doc did just what a documentary is supposed to do, get everyone watching to feel the same thing. You may have never of heard of some of these artists before, but if you're intelligent and can watch/listen to anything with an open mind, if you look past the music and hear the message behind it all you are left with a feeling of upright positivity and hope. A documentary should take a subject that is specific in that not everyone knows or even likes, but portrays it in a way that we can all see it on a human level, eye to eye the great message that it tells. I think Dave's comedy was just frequent enough to keep the film light and happy, but sparse enough to keep the message serious. I thought this wasn't a mind blowing or ground breaking documentary but it was a mind expanding film.

reply

Why would anyone think this was a comedy concert? It was pretty clear to me (perhaps because I have a fully functional brain) that it was music/comedy.

reply

im white, i liked block party,
(and to original poster) how can you not love !?the roots?.//!?

reply

funnily enough i am white, and british, and i loved block party! shock horror! i suppose being a big chappelle fan and hip hop fan meant that this movie/doc/whatever it is was right for me.

In V, Hugo's lines were pretty good, some of the older english actors were nice, but it wasn't very interesting. The whole thing about Portman being imprisoned for months was totally unbelievable, which is bad for a movie that is trying to be realistic. The action scenes were pretty uninteresting, unoriginal and did little to rouse my enthusiasm. The "Messages" in the movie were pretty moot and uninspired. All in all it was a pretty average movie, not bad, but not good, nothing I'd ever wish to see again.

Block Party doesn't really have a plot, but like Robert Altman movies, it has a lot to say. Chappelle is an intersting person/celebrity, not your typical jackass comedian, he is both wacky and reserved. You can tell that he doesn't especially like being in the limelight. Unmotivated by some movie deal or money he just wants one thing, to have all of his favorite musicians play at a block party and invite a good crowd to enjoy it with him. Before the concert they show us Dave's hometown, a nice touch. They show where they will be holding the Bock party and the history behind the crazy house and it's interesting inhabitants. It shows us real reactions by people whom Dave personally invited to his party. Each artist that plays has camera time before and after the show to add dimension to their character and their role in the movie/show. The movie showed it's audience something that few people could ever hope to witness. On top of that the music and the performances were top notch.

Say what you will but movies like V are a dime a dozen and Block Party is a rare gem.

ur an idiot if u dont lik da artist dont watch it

I wasn't into the artists except for The Fugees and the occasional songs by Erykah Badu and Jill Scott that I get to hear (they're not at all popular in Australia, unfort), but now I definitely want to find some albums by those guys and the rest.

I only knew Mos Def from his acting, too!

Loved "Block Party". Exhilirating, supurbly performed and just so good to see a movie that makes you happy simply by it being there and not giving you manipulative heartpulling scenes. It was just great.

reply

V for Vendetta, are you serious? That ish is whack. It has one, one!, good scene. Believe me, Block Party is way better. You don't have to "appreciate" the artists to enjoy the movie, but there's no denying that the musical quality was indeed present.

reply

vanilla person, it'd probably help your argument if you hadnt started the thread with the word "um..."

reply

don't go for chocolate if you only like vanilla. simple as that.

just wanna point out that this bloke is an idiot, and him saying he doesnt 'get' it because hes not black is ridiculous. Im white, and i absolutely love this film. I thought it was great and you dont have to be black, or ethnic or anything for that matter to appreciate the fantastic artists, and what they represent and talk about. Its an inspiration film, no matter what walk of life your from. Im from England, im white, i live in a rural part of the country called Cornwall, and this little film touched me. It even brought a tear to my eye because its inspirational. The guy who started this thread, and anyone who thinks they cant 'get' the film because of their backgrounds is an idiot, and needs to broaden their minds.

reply

Why would you have to be black to like the film? It's music. Music has no color. Get over it and stop whining.
