the drummer

who was the drummer?

the guy with the afro and beard
the guy who was talking about dave playing round about midnight

reply

Quest Love, a member of The Roots. His real name is Ahmir-Khalib Thompson. He's possibly the best drummer in the business.

?uestlove is the best drummer in the business at least top three

Rap is Hip-Hop.
Hip-Hop is not Rap.

Rap is a sub genre of Hip Hop, its not all gangerster rap about drugs and "bithces" check out a few of The Roots CDs, you will not be disipointed

Finally, someone recognizes this distinction.....GOD!!!

I love it when "non-drummers" try to discuss drumming and drummers.

It makes me laugh - Much in the same way Keanu's acting makes me laugh.

On EVERY SINGLE forum in the world that has a section related about drums in it you get some idiot/noob/non drummer saying something like this about Travis Barker (or maybe joey jordison) , I come here hoping for a change of pace and damn they seem to be following me even here! Travis Barker is an extremely famous, but is just above average drummer, for those who dont know

?estlove is the mans name (as said before) an he amazing drummer, his insanely tight grooves and timing (and the man has some darned good chopz aswell lol) are just so good. The Roots we're sweet aswell

you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

reply

Travis Barker? The tattooed guy from Blink-182?!? He's talented, he's no doubt professional, but there are few modern drummers with the technical skill, range & respect that ?uestlove's got.

reply

i agree with with you two 100%

reply

[deleted]

Travis would have been cool if he stuck with the Aquabats. That was when he was his best. Now he's a prick/douchebag.

Yeah you're wrong there buddy. Questlove is the most coveted and respected drummer in the industry and by people who actually know *beep* Travis Barker is good, but not even worthy to lick the sweat off of Quest's throne.

reply

He's the best hip hop drummer.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach...

reply

come on...

it's ?uestlove.

Not Quest.

reply

Does anybody know who Dave Chappelle's publicist is?

reply

omg im sorry whoever thinks travis barker is the best is retarted, love is awesome himself but there completly different it is impossible to compare them, barker plays with quick fills and just about quick everything whereas love is the opposite, id say that love is the best at what he does and barker just sucks

reply

barker? that was a joke, right? there are thousands of drummers that can play like him. but there is only one quest love.

reply

Travis Barker is no where near the best drummer in the business. He is good, but way overrated. He could never match the groove or feel of ?uestlove. As far as the best drummer in the business goes, try Steve Gadd or Vinnie Colaiuta.

What's left to say he was ever here at all?

reply

this is the truth!@!!!!

reply

As much as I love ?uest, there are way better drummers. The Roots make some amazing music though.

I've always enjoyed Quest love. but I'd bet he'd give props to:

Ringo Starr(Beatles)
Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks(James Brown)
John Bonham(Led Zeppelin)
Art Blakey(Jazz Messengers)
Keith Moon(the Who)

and possibly 2 of my favorites:
Levon Helm(the Band)
Phil Collins(Genesis)

reply

[deleted]

[old joke] Ringo Starr wasn't the best drummer in the world, he wasn't eve the best drummer in the Beatles [/old joke]

reply

HAHAHAHAHA!
It's so true. Paul redubbed most of his beats.

reply

Alright - heres the deal. The best drummer alive, right now, is without doubt, jojo mayer. As far as groove, timing, speed, polyrhythmic ability, and technique, i havent seen anyone come close. He does jazz, jungle, hip hop, and i havent seen anyone better, short of buddy rich. And if anyone says theres a better drummer than that, your opinion is invalid.

reply

I mentioned him in my 1st post 12 posts ago...

reply

Jojo is the man, but go listen to Quest's break beat on the end of the song The Roots do with Erykah Badu called "You Got Me." So freakin clean and full of chops. So smooth and clean it is IN-HUMAN.

Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience) (possibly the best drummer ever)
and Jules Rodino (Blue Oyster Cult)

amen brother

what these people have in common as does the radiohead drummer and ?estlove, is that they aren´t necesarily the technically best drummers around (although some may be) what they do best is play what the song requires them to play, what flows, grooves doesn´t jar with what the band is doing, becoming a part of the music, that is what a musician does, and great drummers to me, are great musicians.

ps. same goes for Josh Freese, although he is mostly a hired gun, he knows his way around a kit, and never goes over the top (vandals no included in this statement)

:)

reply

I love the roots but Carter Beauford is the best in the biz right now.

reply

You guys need to check out a young cat named Chris Coleman; and of course there's Sonny Emory and Marcus Williams.

reply

?uestlove is a hundred times better than travis barker but Phil Selway of Radiohead takes drumming to a different level.

reply

[deleted]

Different level, definately. He's a drum god to be sure, but I've seen both radiohead and the Roots, and ?uestlove changes snares mid song. By hand. While filling in on the kick & hi-hat. Just for the chorus & then back again. It's amazing.
But so's Phil.

reply

If you want an exhibition of ?uestlove's talent then listen to the song "You Got Me" featuring Erykah Badu. During the final chorus...Beautiful sound and the fact that it is coming from a man's wrists makes it even more beautiful.

reply

if it came down to it ?uestlove would have my vote

saw the roots in concert about 4 months ago ... i went in not really ever listening to them before and left dumbfounded it was easily the best show i have ever seen

Hey, Elephants_Gerald instead of ripping us why not add something constructive to the conversation?
And yes ringo star is'nt the greatest drummer of all time, he just performed on some of the greatest albums of all time

reply

I think we are all forgeting the incomparable Ginger Baker of Cream fame. Well put phillatio, Ringo Star never needed to nor did flex any real drumming skills, not with John and Paul holding him back, lol.

reply

How about that cat from 311

reply

everyone's forgetting about the legend that is phil collins

reply

I like ?love-- his afro makes him automatically awesome. I think "who's the best drummer?" is a very difficult question to answer; as a drummer myself, I think it's difficult to say someone is the best, just our favorites. There are different things we appreciate about each percussionist, especially in their own genre's, so to say one single drummer is the best would be a disservice the art of percussion itself. My personal favorite? Max Weinberg.

reply

Yeah, max is good
I appreciate his comedic chops on Conan as much as his musical skills

reply

I don't know if he's necesarily the best drummer in the business, but it surprises me that nobody mentioned Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters. I know of many artists who think he is about the best there is.

reply

Dave Grohl could never match that 'fro. Just kidding, Grohl is a great musician, all around

reply

I'm surprised no one mentioned Buddy Rich, hes got to be up there.

My personal fav. drummers

Chad Smith and ?uestlove. (Chad isnt anywhere near some of the drummers mentioned, but him with rhcp is simply amazing.)

-edit-
Take that back, buddy rich was mentioned.

reply

Besides Buddy Rich, we will never be able to find who is the best drummer, because every time someone says one name, someone else will come back with another. Obviously it's all opinion. The only thing that bothers me is when people say stupid *beep* like Travis Barker or even worse Chad Smith. I mean what the hell. There are 12 year olds that are better. Just because you can carry a beat and you're in a successful band doesn't mean you are great. Look at Ringo Starr. ?uestlove is a good drummer but he can't compare to others like Dennis Chambers, Buddy Rich, John Bonham etc. So please if you're going to say that Travis Barker or someone else in a famous band is the greatest, please go listen to some Keith Moon or Ginger Baker, or even some heavy metal for gods sake. Any of those people are much better.

reply

Buddy Rich was inventing beats, performing them all flawlessly, and reinventing what people thought a percussion instument could do before any of you were born. To claim anyone else was or is better than he is a blashpemy to anyone who actually knows a)how to play the drums and b) what a good drummer should be capable of and c)what an absolutely great musician it takes to play the drums.
