Why a girl playing a boy?????

Why was the part of Michael, the dead son, played by a girl???????
Surely Hollywood had some young boys that would have done a good job.

Why not? She did a good job. Don't be so stuck in gender roles. ;)

No one is "stuck in gender roles" .

Its just not common to see this in Hollywood. So I was surprised, and chose to post a question.

Yes, she did a wonderful job.

I was just curious as to why a girl was cast as a boy.

Chill out and dont get your panties in a wad over a simple observation and question.

You're an idiot.

It was obvious it was a girl playing the role, which just made the movie seem ridiculous.

Get off your high horse about gender roles.....the new buzz topic in the western world.

Why would it be a problem?

reply

Absolutely not

That's Jodelle Ferland who I hadn't heard of but she would later play Bree on the last episode of the Twilight Saga. She has also done more roles and is in a new series Dark Matter, so I think her career seems to be going well. She has a heck of a scream as we hear in The Messengers and later in Twilight.

Do you need a bowman!?

Not sure why everyone freaked out over a simple question.

Moral high ground, I guess.

Maybe because the post title had five question marks and the text had six or seven. If it was a "simple" question, there'd be one or two. The excess implies strong emotion, possibly disdain or disbelief. That said, I have no problem with the casting; I couldn't even tell.

It is a fair question. Yes, it is odd. I also don’t think people would be as relaxed if it were a male playing female. There are a lot of double standards like that now.

People love their “moral highground” to the point that common sense isn’t a factor.

But I think the answer to your question is simply the movie cast the best actor for the part. I doubt it’s any more of a mystery than that. I don’t think there is anything political in it like some of these other replies seem to think.

I agree. The actress did a wonderful job in the movie and she probably was simply the best one for the character.

Males play female roles all the time. Look at John Travolta.
