if this movie is wack Ferrara's career is over. i heard R-Xmas was reasonably well received in Europe but everywhere else it bombed. And i don't need to remind anybody of the whole 'New Rose Hotel' fiasco. somewhat innovative movie that was criminally misunderstood and now lost to the ages. let's hope for the best on this. Ferrara needs a hit.

reply

This is not the type of film to be a hit. However it has gotten mixed reactions from dreadful to brilliant. It is obviously the best Ferrara in ages, but wont earn a cent

reply

well not a 'hit' by mainstream standards. doesn't surprise me the response was mixed. mixed is ok when it comes to Ferrara. i never seen him do a bad movie with religious themes. Having said that, it would have been nice if St.John wrote the screenplay.

Mary won a Special Jury Award at Venice Film Festival!
Good news!

reply

I hope that's true. Do you know what type of award it was? Details please!

i just heard that Asia Argento said that 'Mary' is Ferrara's best movie. i'll have to do some more research. if that's true then i'm impressed because she is a huge fan of his work, esp the early to mid 90's stuff.

According to the festival's official web site, it won a "Special Jury Prize", which pretty much amounts to second place behind Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain", which won the Golden Lion. I'm curious to see what angle toward Mary M. his film is taking. He gave Binoche very little direction, allowing her to use her instincts. The only Ferrara film I saw with a religious theme was, "Bad Lieutenant", but I was pretty impressed.

I saw it in Venice twice!
the first one I thought it was a mess.
the second one I realized that it was one of the Festival best!
It's a very powerful movie, beautifully shooted, terrific! Ferrara has done an amazing work, believe me.

I am very happy, that you have the chance to see it at Venice Film Festival.
Please, tell me something about Juliette Binoche. Is she the lead? What about her performance?
What other movies did you see at the Festival?
I would be very thankful for those informations.

hehe. that was exactly my reaction to 'The Funeral' :-)

I just saw this at the Toronto film fest, and Ferrara was kind enough to show up and take some Q&A after. It got a really good reception here and it was clear from the crowd's thoughtful questions.

I'm on the "excellent" side of the fence here. It was a very considerate film focused on the characters. More emotional than plot driven, it was more about characters facing personal adversity than about religion or anything else.

yo dsc-12 thanks for sharing that with us. how would u say it compared to his more recent output? i thought R-Xmas and New Rose Hotel were very underrated myself. nice to hear it was well received. maybe it could make some money for him.

reply

I've only seen Bad Lieutenant by him, so I can't say. I'm willing to guess this WON'T make money, as it is emotional and challenging. It is however excellent.

And to answer michal-ewan, Binoche is barely in the film.

i thought she was the main character? this kind of worries me. the focus is on modine and whitaker? i wish Vincent Gallo was in it instead of Modine. he isn't that great of an actor really.
