Be aware that its region 2 PAL (EUROPE ONLY) and that all DVDs by this company have forced subtitles over english lahguage tracks. You cannot switch them off. That said Wild bunch only produce the best DVDs!

thx for the warning. any chance 'Mary' will be an exception though? i don't want subtitles all over the screen. something tells me it isn't going to be released anywhere else on dvd anytime soon though......i'm stuck :-( hahha. thx again.

Nope Im afraid I have just seen the menus and the chioce is English with French Subs or French language. It is being released on DVD in Spain in December and Portugal in January.

The film will come out in the US eventually, there has been as distribution deal done with Palm Pictures, but it is yet to be confirmed. It is also being released in Australia in Feb - which will mean a DVD next August. I will keep you posted on DVD details

I think it is a wonderful film, the most out-and-out original thing I have seen in years!

THAT IS A DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH IFC AND ITS OFFICIAL. MARY IS COMING TO THE USA. THE CRITICS WILL HATE IT!

thx a lot for that. where did u hear about the Australian release? i just saw it at the melbourne film festival last month. that's good news anyway.

i agree it was original, and i can't wait to see it again, on my own, to appreciate it on my own terms. thx for the updates.

I have a contact with the Australian distributor Accent Films. What was reaction like in Australia? Pretty mixed I bet! Its such a precise film that as many like it will hate it, but it's this precision that I like somuch. Ferrara has had the nerve to keep the edges sharp without exploiting his subject. Never does he pander to the masses or to expectation...

reply

sorry man, completely forgot about this. the reaction? i'm not sure. i didn't read the papers much during the film festival. i can only judge by the reaction at the screening i attended. the verdict? mixed :-) there was some hesitant clapping at the end, but i didn't read it as a sign that it was a 'bad' movie. it was a very serious film, that is quite emotionally draining, so clapping isn't the first obvious response. the guy i went with--who doesn't know much about ferrara--was really impressed. in fact, he couldn't wait to see it again. i didn't know anybody else that saw it. shame really.

I found this by accident -
1. go to the audio menu,
2. select the original english,
3. press stop,
4. press play - et voila, no subtitle!

Note: the release is a 1 disc edition, despite the amazon description!

The film is definitely on DVD in Paris. Saw it on display while I was in town on vacation. If I had known it was not available in the US I would have bought a copy. But my friends in Paris live around the corner from the store so they can hook me up. I have an all-region player.

The film is confirmed for rental DVD in Australia in november and sale in February
