Why did GoodKat.....?

Just finished watching this movie. I loved it. Just a question I have about goodkat.

GoodKat is suppose to be this ruthless assassin who murders women, children and just about anything... why he gets called for jobs other people won't take.

Was it ever explained why he took Slevin on as a ward instead of killing him? Even helping him kill the people who murdered his family? Or did this remain ambiguous? I assumed maybe his family were butchered much like Slevin and he "understood".

Just wondering if I missed anything or if there's anything about in dvd extras.

I'm going to guess because the kid was not nervous or shaken so he saw him as a protégé
Early in the film, 'Josh' mention having a condition that keeps him from being worried
