Some of it was filmed at my school too. My school being Giggleswick School, Settle, North Yorkshire. I don't know where your school was but probably Woodhouse Grove (lots of the external scenes of the grand school in the snow) or Bradford Grammar School (some internal scenes)?
Giggleswick School was used for its landmark Chapel overlooking the Yorkshire Dales and "the play" is filmed inside and Alex is seen outside it painting the scenery and then inside the chapel vestry making a cinema date with the doomed young actress...later too in there talking to Nigel's (also doomed) parents.
One brief scene outside our chapel is seen with parents and visitors walking up steps to it for the play (which goes on despite the leading actress being murdered). I watched this being filmed and it was a typically wild and windy Yorkshire night and they did well to film it without the beacons being blown out.
If you are into location trivia you'll be fascinated to know that the scene with the detective finding the dead girl in the greenhouse is filmed just behind Giggleswick Chapel in a maintenance yard, next to it is where in 1927 the astronomer royal observed the total eclipse of the sun!
The location of the train I assume is in Australia, as were some of the studio internal scenes.

the snowy grand school exteriors and the early headmasters office and corridor scenes (and maybe Alex's room were most certainly filmed at High Royds Psychiatric Asylum at Menston in Yorkshire. (then derelict, now redeveloped)
shareI worked as an extra on this movie (i was one of the students) and in reading the threads thought i might be of some help with the location details.
It is a while since i saw the movie but as far as i can remember, we filmed the chapel scenes at Giggleswick School & some exteriors, the Hall scenes were filmed at Bradford Grammer School, the dining room scenes were at a school whose name escapes me (that may have been Woodhouse Grove). Some of the grand school exteriors were actually shot at a place called Carlton Towers near Goole (some other exteriors, interiors & possibly even Alex's room were done there too). Some exteriors were filmed at High Royds, along with all the classroom scenes and the headmasters office too & beleive me, that was one creepy old building.
