I've heard that the film might be based on a book? is this true, or was it just referring to the fact that is was a play?

The movie is based on the Book "Mine Ha Ha: The Physical Education of Girls" by German Journalist and Author Frank Wedekind. A first movie was made based on that book: Innocence by director Lucile Hadzihalilovic.

The book is quite different from the film though imo.
