Irene's outcome (spoiler)

I didn't see or understand who killed Irene during the dance performance and why. Please help me out.

she seemed intensely jealous of the princes intrest in hidalla.
then hung herself, still suicide seemed a bit of an over reaction.

She realised that she screwed up everything for herself by blabbing about Blanca sleeping with Gertrude. Blanca was the original "chosen one" for the Prince. If Irene had kept quiet about it the Prince would have gone off with Blanca, not Hidalla. Yes she might have been afraid of losing Hidalla, but I think she killed herself because she opened her big fat mouth and caused the love of her life to be taken away. SHE TOTALLY SCREWED EVERYTHING UP. FOR BOTH OF THEM!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I agree.

Either way, I felt worse for Blanca and Gertrude. At least they were somewhat likeable. I HATED Irene. : (

What made you hate Irene?

Just curious.

There's beauty in breakdown

I loved Irene, partly because I just love Hannah and am fascinated by her, and wish she would rise from the dead and come back to acting. Also because the bulk of her actions served as major plot points to get this movie through.

I kind of felt sorry for her because Hidalla definitely hurt her feelings several times, and she was always happy for Hidalla, always comforting Hidalla, but whenever Irene was told she was ugly, and was in tears, Hidalla just simply looked to the floor. When Irene got her hair cut and Hidalla FINALLY showed some remorse or sympathy for her friend, I was finally like THANK YOU!

Irene most likely killed herself due to a combination of things: two of her friends have been killed within the school system, she turned in her other friend, Hidalla was flirting with the Prince, and she was putting two and two together that this ''dance'' was more than that( headmistress was always saying ''one of you will dance for the prince'', they are looking and checking the girl's bodies to make the final decision, and some of the men in the audience were clearly wearing novelty animal masks, there were no women in the audience besides the prince's live in pimp lady mistress, or whatever she was).

Irene is fascinating as a character because she is the only one that changes or goes through a process of some kind of character development. I was astonished when she...did what she did. Everyone else's actions were not shocking based on their character. Irene you never expected it from because she did seem to have a strength to see past her naivety, unlike the rest of the girls. Irene is also the only one that, in my opinion, had she formed a plan to get away, she would have made it and survived.

Melusine was the only other one I would feel safe betting money on that she could get out. Solely because Melusine's ''get the hell out and run and don't stop to ask questions'' way of dealing with things seems a bit more effective than everyone's else's way of dealing with it. Had Melusine made it over that fence, she would have had a good 5 hour lead on the headmistress-she could have been in town, and told a number of people, thereby putting a huge strain on the operation. Headmistress didn't even know they were out of bed.

Gertrude I question quite a bit because unlike Irene, she knew what fate was ahead for Blanca, and yet she acted the way she did. Maybe Gertrude felt that it was best to let Blanca have her hour or two of bliss and joy of being prima ballerina, because whether she was prima or not, she was going to eventually get raped. Then Blanca could come back to the school and work in the system and they could then be lovers with less risk...seeing as Blanca had already been used. If that was not Gert's way of thinking...I question her motives.

I suspect all women seen in this movie were once raped by prince (simba, gertrude, maybe even headmistress, dance teacher) and his wealthy friends.

i agree with Lisa, I think she she figured out that the prince was going to take Hidalla away or whatever and she realized she just screwed herself over by opening her mouth about those two sleeping together. Not only did she leave Hidalla to be raped by the prince by opnening her mouth but also she ruined Blanka, she might also have felt remorse for having done that to Blanka and Gurtrude.

I think that during the final performance, Irene's eyes were suddenly opened as to what exactly was going on, and that the lives of her and the other girls were all about accomodating the lusts of the prince. The enormity of this discovery and the helplessness of their situation was simply too much for her.
