It had me in tears. And it's very hard to do that to me.

reply

I'm a guy and I loved it! I think the movie touched my heart in a way I never thought possible. Such a heartwarming film.

reply

I liked this movie. I also liked The Lake House. As one gets older, it is nice to see young love again just like when you were young.

reply

I'm a guy, sweiland75, and I LOVE this movie to the point where I still watch my DVD of it Nightly, at least once. .....And that has been going on since 8th May 2006: .....the date it was first released on DVD here in the U.K.

I even dubbed it to VHS tape so I could take it on holiday to my usual Guest House and watch it whist there.

You are most certainly NOT ALONE, my friend. .....But, I had begun to think I might be.

I may not be the movie's only male fan, but I'm probably its OLDEST, .....approaching 66.

I have heard this movie called a "Chick-Flick". .....Can someone tell me what constitues a "Chick-Flick", and why it differs from other types of movie? .....Surely, all movies are for both Men and Women? .....Aren't they?

Nightly? Now that seems obsessive, whether you are male OR female!

That's me, Sweiland. .....I'm Obsessed by this movie, AND its wonderful Leading Lady.

She does seem like the typical girl next door, doesn't she?

Well, Sweiland, I first saw a photo of Reese on the "Net" shortly after I arrived "On-Line". She was attending the premier of JLH in September, 2005. I so liked what I saw that I determined to see some of her work, to find our if she was all she had been "Cracked-Up" to be. I was NOT disappointed.

"Just Like Heaven" was released on DVD here, in the U.K., on 8th May, 2006; and I received my Pre-Order copy on 6th May, 2006. Since then, I have become so obsessed with both the movie and with Reese that I can now "Put Neither Down" as they say.

Pitty I'm old enough to be M/s Witherspoon's father. If I were single, and 30 years younger, I might have had more serious thoughts now that she is "available" again. That Husband of hers was an IDIOT to let a lady like her get away.

Well, you can at least fantasize.

reply

I don't know about fantasizing, Weiland; but I do have, as my Desktop Wallpaper, the scene from "Just Like Heaven" where Elizabeth has just returned home from Hospital after coming out of her coma, and is sitting in the window of her Appartment. ...She is staring at the wring left, by David, on her coffee table.

In addition, I posted the following on Reese's own board, on the "500 posts for Reese" Thread. We started having a party over there, so I threw in this, as a bit of entertainment. It fits the signature tune of the former BBC Radio Series from the 1940's called "Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh".

How's this?

"At Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh, we're here to put some posts down for our Dear Reese.
At Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh, Our Reese is one we cann't let Ryan 'Kid Fleece'.

Her acting's 'Just like Heaven', and she's learned to 'Walk the Line'.
She has the looks, the voice, the charm. ...She really is Divine.
If I could choose, I'd see Reese sat on No-one's knee but MINE
At Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh.".

Glad you like the verse. I used to be a semi-pro entertainer, and had a lot of fun with that particular tune over a good many years. .....Topical verses, and the like. .....The Radio show was way back in the 1940's, when I was a "Kid"; but who cares about that.

If you go back to my prviouse post, Weiland, you'll see I have edited a bit more stuff in concerning my Desktop Wallpaper: .....A picture of Reese, as Elizabeth Masterson, sitting in the window of her Appartment, .....staring at the wring left, by David, on her Cofee Table.

I haven't entered the Picture, just the fact that I have it on there.

How does THAT grab you?

It sounds like a great picture, but, it's Reese so that really goes without saying.

reply

Well, I LOVED her in that outfit, and felt that was one of the best shots I could find of her in it, where Reese was far enough to the Right of the picture not to be blotted out by Desktop icons, etc. Neither Elizabeth (Reese), Nor the Coffee Table, is obstructed by icons.

Over all, it's "Just Like Heaven".

Here's a list of some chick-flick movies:
Titanic (1997)
Coyote Ugly (2000)
Mean Girls (2004)
The Notebook (2004)
A Walk to Remember (2002)
You've Got Mail (1998)
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Sleepless In Seattle (1993)
13 Going On 30 (2004)
Just Like Heaven (2005)

A chick-flick by my definition is a movie that is based for only girls to watch. Maybe on Friday night, the ladies get together and watch Mean Girls.

In order to be known as chick-flick, for me, is:
1. Female characters dominate.
2. Love overshadows comedy.
3. Tear jerker.

Let it be known some movies, have all three.

Coyote Ugly is a prime example of reason 1. Titanic is a prime example of reason 2, and A Walk to Remember is prime example of reason 3.

I think you get the point.

Basically, not all movies are for both genders. Not every woman is going to want to watch The Waterboy or Mission Impossible III. Not every man is going to wanna watch Titanic or The Notebook. There are some movies that are for both genders. I'd say a good example of that would be...I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (though it is not such a wonderful movie, it's for anyone.)

Are you kidding? I LOVE 'The Waterboy'!

Dude, you need to start seeing other women. May I suggest, June Carter in Walk the Line, Elle Wood in Legally Blonde and Melanie Smooter in Sweet Home Alabama

Make YEAH I LOVE THE MOVIE TOO! YOU'RE NOT ALONE DUDE

the movie didnt make me cry, but i just love it because of how they played their roles very well. Plus, Reese Witherspoon (aka Elizabeth in the movie) and Mark Ruffalo (aka David from the movie) had a great chemistry on-screen.It's a funny movie too, that was mixed with some romance in it. I'm not that romantic movie lover ( i prefer adventure and action like Indiana Jones and James Bond) but i don't know how i got addicted to this movie!(I already watched it several times in youtube, however i did'nt get to watch the whole thing because youtube deleted some parts of the movie.particularly, they deleted good parts.....boohooo. I also have the second trailer of the movie saved in my computer!!! God, i'm too addicted!!!!

reply

Some of those movies ARE NOT chick flicks. Films like You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle are couple-movies. Don't mix them up.

Some are just movies for everybody, like Titanic.

Just because a movie has romance in it does not make it a chick flick.

reply

This movie was better than it should have been and I'm gonna give the credit for that to Witherspoon simply for being a delightful human. Plot was kinda dumb and done before. Lead male kinda drippy. Humor lame and forced (save for Heder). Again all saved by Witherspoon's glowing presence.

I may have been bifurcated, but I still have feelings.

Just Like Heaven

An unexplained magic brings them together and yet keeps them apart. They cannot really touch, but they have a special bond that cannot be explained.

She's a beautiful albeit lonely woman, headstrong and yet feminine, greatly respected in her career as a doctor. He's tall, dark, and handsome, sensitive and yet masculine, and he has a fascinating career and lives in a really cool place. He pays no attention to the other hottie in the picture - she is so wrong for him! He is sad from the loss of his wife and needs the love of a good woman.

He must go through a trial in order to be with her. It's a race against time - will true love prevail or will (her) imminent death separate them forever?

To Lacedemonians: .....I note, with interest, your comparrison between "Just Like Heaven", "The Lake House", and "City of Angels". .....Whislt I have not seen "City of Angels", and cannot comment on it, I feel your similarity between "Just Like Heaven" and "The Lake House" leaves a lot to be desired.

You are tending to forget that, in "The Lake House", HE is some 2 years behind HER in time (He's in 2004 whilst she's in 2006), HE dies in HER arms on Valentine's Day, 2006 after being struck by a bus: and it is THAT, that our Lady Doctor has to try to prevent. .....But, SHE does not realise this until Valentine's Day, 2008 (in HER time.).

By the time she realises that she has to save him, HE has already been DEAD for 2 YEARS: .....although, in HIS time, the accident has yet to happen.

With "Just Like Heaven": .....Elizabeth has already had her accident, and has been lying in a coma, in hospital, for 2 months before her SPIRIT returns to her Appartment and meets David. .....Elizabeth's SPIRIT has already had an Out-of-Body Experience, and passed through Death (at the time of the Accident) back into a life away from her BODY; ...and appears to David in a vain hope of him helping her get her Spirit and her Body "Back Together". .....Her Spirit comes to David a second time to try to prevent her Life Support Equipment being switched off: ...but it is only when her Breathing Tube is accidentally removed during the abborted attept to steal her Body, that the two parts of Elizabeth are Re-United in her almost second Death that is prevented by David's "Kiss of Life". .....David Abbot and Elizabeth Masterson were in the same time bracket, but were in 2 different worlds for the first month of their relationship: during the month they shared together at the Appartment. .....They only came into the same one world together when Elizabeth's Spirit told her Heart who this man was that was standing in front of her in the Roof Gareden, handing over the spare key. ....Her Spirit had had its own confirmation of him being David when he had tried to leave, by saying "Good-Bye, Lizzie". .....David had been the only person ever to call her "Lizzie". .....Of course: ...following the use of that name, Elizabeth came out with my Signature "Strap Line" about needing the key back, because her Spirit had told her Body to find an excuse to keep David there for a few minutes whilst it (her Spirit) confirmed his identity.

There is, in my view, NO REAL SIMILARITY between these two movies.

I loved it. I thought it was terrific.

First, Reese Witherspoon has never been more adorable.

Secondly, what guy can't identify with David? We've all gone through the loss of a loved one, whether it's to death or a bad breakup - then comes the mourning period. I thought Mark Ruffalo did a great job.

And third, who doesn't have or doesn't want the kind of friend that David has in Jack (Donal Logue) - trying to set his friend up with somebody, trying to get him out of his funk? And Jack has the best line in the entire movie when David asks why Jack is helping him, Jack says, "Because trust me, the day will come when I'm going to need help moving a body. And when that day comes I don't want to hear any *beep* from you."
