Did anyone feel no chemistry between the leads?

Ruffalo and Witherspoon just felt stilted and awkward. Chemistry is something that can make or break a film like this. Without it, it fell apart. Ruffalo can have chemistry with anyone, but I don't know what happened here.

I meant the kind of chemistry you praised them for. I just didn't feel it personally. She's just too cold to play around with.

She was too cold to play around with at first but what choice did either of them have? She wouldn't leave the house and neither would he. And in time something developed.

Even after all that, I still couldn't buy them together.

reply

Yeah I didn't feel like they had any chemistry. I still really like the film.

It's probably Witherspoon. Like I did: Ruffallo is the kind of actor who can have chemistry with anyone in his films. He's so versatile and warm that whatever role he plays, he still connects to his co-stars. Witherspoon, on the other hand, is notorious for never having any chemistry with any of her co-stars. Not with Vince Vaughn. Not with Tom Hardy. Not with anyone. I'm guessing is because Witherspoon always plays her characters very cold and steely that they can't connect with anyone because of how she plays them. She was never meant to star in romantic comedies.

Precisely. While she can play a variety of genres, she's just too limited in her acting. Not that that is a bad thing since she's really good at that, but casting her as part of a couple, it's just miscasting. Heck, her best performance was in Wild, and she didn't interact with anyone for a good majority of it.
