virgin????

was elizabeth a virgin?????? if it has already come up i am terribly sorry. thanks for any help

reply

Elizabeth was a professional Career lady, a Doctor, who was "Not seeing anyone" (according to her Sister), and "Whos entire life WAS the Hospital" (according to her Coleague and Mentor, Fran).

No-one who knew her had ever heard of her having a male companion or a boyfriend; so I think we can safely assume from that that YES, Elizabeth was a Virgin.

Well I don't know about that. The only thing that we know about her life prior to the opening scene in the hospital is when she tells the story about her MCAT scores and drinking margaritas. So while she definitly wasn't with anyone while she was working at the hospital, she certainly could have been with someone prior to that. We don't have any way of knowing.

And she does say on her final night that she is really bad at this kind of thing (or something like that), and while that doesn't necessarily mean being intimate (although it could be interpreted that way), I think it does mean that she had been in a prior situation in which she had been with someone romantically, or where she had expressed feelings for someone else.

But that's just my take on everything.

reply

They don't really elude to her being a virgin.

She went to college to be a doctor. She looks like Reese Witherspoon. College students drink. Even the ones that study really hard. She looks like Reese Witherspoon. Stuff happens.

I think the implication was that she was too busy for relationships since she had become a doctor, not that she never had a life.

reply

Not every college student drinks. I was on the straight-edge all 4 years. Granted, I still went to parties, dated and had fun.

reply

Not that it's important to the story, but I don't think she was a virgin. She's a very attractive woman, and as somebody else observed, she went to college bars, drank, had fun. College, and medical school especially, are stressful times. Not to sound crude or crass, but there are very few stress relievers as effective and enjoyable as sex.

Plus, she had boyfriends. Plus, she went to high school. High school is where many kids have their first sexual experiences. I can't say that Elizabeth is one of them, but she very well could have been.

The argument that she couldn't have been a virgin because of how she looks is ridiculous. For a woman, being a virgin or not has nothing whatsoever to do with looks. A lot of guys would bang any woman who is willing, whether she's attractive or butt-ugly - as long as she has the right parts, she's what they want. So to say that an attractive woman can't be a virgin past college is just stupid. SHE has a choice in the matter as well, you know (assuming she doesn't meet up with any rapists). Of course if it were up to the guys around her she wouldn't be, but she could just not want to have sex for whatever reason.

She was a virgin, and touched for the very first time.

reply

hahahah love it

They never really say either way...so I guess the audience is just to believe what they want...

reply

Remember when they went to the middle aged guy's home, who was cheating on his wife. I thought perhaps she might have fooled around with him, maybe not. She might have been a virgin.

reply

Going by what Fran said, and her sister's comments, yes I'd agree that she's a virgin.

reply

lordzimbu,

i distinctly remember that her sister talked about her boyfriends, or she talked about her sister taking care of her, and checking the boyfriends

also, she was about to go on a date with a guy, when her accident happened and she didn't seem too nervous about it

The guy she was going to meet was mark ruffalo! It was fate!!

reply

I didnt get this impression. Yes she hadn't dated recently cause she's too busy but that doesn't mean she doesn't or never did get laid... After all a girl doesn't need a steady boyfriend for that.. And there was a time in junior college before med school where she might have dated.

I doubt it. She had no relationship in her life as of the time of the movie but there was so much of a back story before the movie even started if you get what I mean. From what I gather and this could be the most stereotypical comment ever, most American teens lose it in their late school years to college years. We're seeing Elizabeth well past those footloose and fancy free episodes. Impossible to assume either way methinks.

My two cents worth...

Whenever a question like this comes up about a movie plot line or a character I always use the same critieria to answer. In this case:

Yes, she was a virgin, because it is the more interesting dramatic choice.

reply

I don't think she was.
She has a life before the hospital career.
And in the book, she had a boyfriend and wasn't a virgin at all!

reply

Oh my God... why does every IMDB board discuss this? I doubt she was a virgin. I bet she's had relationships before, but nothing close to the connection she has with David because she never had time for relationships.

This is nearly as bad as the 'Which Harry Potter characters are virgins?'

I highly doubt she's a virgin. She had high school and then University, and she went out partying at least once - no way she is. She may have said she's 'bad at this' on her last night simply because she hasn't had a REAL relationship for a long time. How old is she meant to be? She had to be late 20's.

And she was going on a date at the start - that was hardly the 'Oh my... This is my first date' kind of thing.

I'm 27. I've been through college. I'm not super religious. I've partied and gotten wasted with friends. I've dated and even shared a bed with a guy. I'm attractive.

But I'm still a virgin, in fact I haven't even gone past first base. I'm no prude, and I'm not opposed to having fun, but I'm saving THAT for someone I love. And I'm a lot like the Elizabeth character in that I've always been a total workaholic and just never really made time for relationships. And the idea of casual sex is just nasty to me. It's just not something I take lightly.

So it is possible...and Elizabeth didn't seem like the type to have casual sex either. When the Mark Ruffalo character said he loved her, she said that was the first time anyone had ever said that to her. Meaning she had never been in a serious relationship with a guy, which COULD mean she'd never had sex.

I think it's hilarious that people assume that a woman's attractiveness has anything to do with how much sex she's had. There are plenty of ugly sluts, and there are plenty of gorgeous virgins.

Putting all stereotypes aside, religion and age and all that, i seem to recall that she said there was one thing she always wished that she had done. The scene then goes to both of them lying on the bed together. The implication was that she never shared a bed with a man before. That's where I got the notion that she might have been a virgin.

reply

I definitely think she was. She doesn't seem the type to do anything with someone she's not close to, and since she apparently had no time for anything besides work she probably never really got around to doing that.
