The Poorest film in the IMDB top 250

Whilst I agree that I must be in the minority here, I must admit to being baffled at the high rating. I don't recall laughing once.

When I compare the comedies of the last 40 years to this - and I realise how mnay greats this has topped - then I start to worry about the world we live in.

No wonder this planet is doomed - 90% of its inhabitants are idiots! (yes, i'm in the 10%)

Says the guy who gave the Taxi Driver 1/10 and watches "Smallville"...gg.

reply

haha - Taxi Driver is loved because its cool to like Scorseses films - makes me sick.

Smallville is great! The fact that its getting an eighth season justifies that. You ass !

So tell me - What was the best joke in Hot Fuzz?

What a big headed person you are...... Just because most people on these board really enjoyed Hot Fuzz you presumed they were idiots. Eh...just because you don't like a film it doesn't class a person who liked it, an idiot. I find this totally insulting. Why should you care about the ratings on this web site when you clearly disagree with it ! So what.. it is not the end of the world as claimed by you in your original post. I loved the film. I loath the God father but it was a good film and it is number one in the ratings. I don't whinge about it as I accept everyones taste is different.

Edgar, Simon and Nick are just pure fried gold.

My sister went to harvard cambridge and oxford, and her favourite movie is Anchorman... So what does that mean? She is probably in the top 5% but hey she just likes good movies! And she liked this too. And we are not British or American.. The OP is silly

Joke? I was watching a movie, not stand up...

So tell me, junior, what is it that makes "Smallville" so great?

Apologies - the idiots thing was tongue in cheek - I just failed to see the comedy. I am British and I thought Shaun off.. was not bad - this just didn't do anything for me.

I guess I love Smallville because i'm a superhero fan - Batman Begins, Iron Man etc - Who doesn't like those two?

To the poster who said something along the lines of 'i went to see a movie - not a stand up comic' - sure, but its still classed as a comedy - what were the funny parts in your opinion?

The movie was like "Midsomers Murders" on roids, I loved when the stereotypic British crime&gardening characters are armed with MG's and go on a rampage.

To the OP

Hot Fuzz is a black comedy which pays homage to all the buddy cop films we see from America. Your sense of humour is clearly different to everyone on this web site. You clearly did not see any comedy. The death of Tim Messager was brilliantly executed and really funny. When Simon Skinner was empaled on the model church spirl and then he said he wanted ice cream this was comedy.

Edgar, Simon and Nick are pure fried gold.

A Child !!! I very much doubt it.
You don't have the sense of humour to appriecate this film. That's why you did not like it ! Simply that !

reply

Besides the slapstick and silly humor, there's also spot on humor with great timing and line deliveries. This is not John Candy comedy where you *expect* to smile or laugh and the comedians/actors are mugging for the camera, but it's good comedy where you find yourself smiling and really enjoying it because it mixes a lot of comedic genres.

We're not obligated to like Hot Fuzz, we just do. It goes beyond basic comedy and moves into a subtle cerebral element -- which unsurprisingly went over the OP's head.

Sokka: My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
Zuko: That's rough, buddy.

Joke topic?

Edgar Wright is a genius. if you didnt find it funny...it's perfectly alright, more power to ya. Just don't group all of us who did enjoy it into a 90% idiot category...it only makes you look the fool, not us.

To OP

There are plenty of Twats of these boards. This film was one of the best black comedies of all time. Now Okay I understand if you did not like it... each to their own. But if you did not find the film clever, intelligent and witty then you don't have a very good sense of humour.

reply

My brother warned me that this wasn't funny, but I liked it. It wasn't rolling on the floor laughing stuff, but it gave me a good giggle the whole way through.

Funny bits? When Danny and Nick are having a back and forth about possible motives, and Nick is excited because it seems like Danny is catching on, and he finishes brilliantly with 'it was probably an accident.'

Nick's face when the townspeople explained their motives? PRICELESS. It really was.

Just random one liners....."that was murder!" "no, its ketchup"

But I can't tell you to find these things funny. But just because I did doesn't make me stupid. I probably think the things you laugh at are stupid, but doesn't worry me either way :)

No, my question, I get to go first....

reply

I don't, I think Iron Man was blandly entertaining at best.

Nowhere near the same league of Batman Begins, Taxi Driver, or this film, Hot Fuzz.

reply

A comedy isnt necessarily something you laugh at...its how the story ends...if it ends well, has a humorous and light story line its a comedy. If it ends poorly its a tragedy. Gees....didnt you learn anything from Shakespeare?

reply

[deleted]

No, because, as you've just said, 90% of all people are morons.

How do you know that the 90% aren't the ones giving the movie high ratings? Unless you wanna say because you give it a high rating, and you're in the ten percent, therefore; everyone who rates it high must be in the ten percent.

Circular logic. It's called a tautology, you see:

How do you know that they're smart?

Because they rated it high.

How do you know that they are the ones who rated it high?

Because they're smart.

reply

"haha - Taxi Driver is loved because its cool to like Scorseses films - makes me sick. "

I don't like most of Scorsese's films, probably because I haven't watched them all, & I still loved Taxi Driver.

Since when has it been cool to like his films? Seems to me that now days most people seem to worship anything put out by those Hacks behind Epic Movie.

I agree and take heart. By the year's end it will be knocked off the top 250.

It's pure insanity to think this film deserves a higher ranking than Network.

reply

John Candy would be spinning in his grave? I doubt it but if so i'm guessing it would be somewhat slowly......
This film was side-splittingly funny. Laugh out loud funny - 'LOL' where you're actually doing exactly that and not just texting it!
We all have different humour and if Hot Fuzz didn't salt your spuds - fine, hire Uncle Buck out and laugh at that. You cant beat a bit of John Candy but that did absolutely nothing for me. I wouldn't log in to IMDB just to knock it though.

reply

[deleted]

Hot Fuzz isn't a bad film, it just doesn't belong in the top 250 by a long shot. It just wasn't funny or interesting enough.

The posters who are jumping all over the OP said he must not have a sense of humor or understand the film. Wrong. He just doesn't have YOUR sense of humor and neither do I.

Sure I recognized homages to Infernal Affairs, The Wicker Man, Lethal Weapon, Straw Dogs, Le Samourai, High Plains Drifter, Passport to Pimlico, Bad Boys II, and Point Break. So what? It's far easier to imitate and spoof than to make a parody really funny, fresh and gripping. Now Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane! and Young Frankenstein....those are parodies that completely stand on their own and are LOL funny!

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Singin' in the Rain.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than The Apartment.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Kill Bill vol 1.

Hot Fuzz is probably a better film than Kill Bill vol 2 but I haven't seen that one yet so I can't comment.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Iron Man.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Crash.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Snatch.

Hot Fuzz is a better film than Pirates of the Carribean.

I could go on.

Poorest film I've seen in the top 250 has to be Snatch, one of few films on the list I actually consider bad.

Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. Hello? Hello?

Airplane! A good film !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was rubbish !! But that is my opinion only. Why do people come here and whine about the IMDB top 250. Hot Fuzz should be in the first 10 of that rating and that is just my opinion. Just because you see a film you don't like in the IMDB ratings it doesn't mean it isn't worthy film to see. Stop slating Hot Fuzz and move on.

Edgar, Simon and Edgar are just pure gold.

>>Stop slating Hot Fuzz and move on.

Getting nervous? Remarkably, Hot Fuzz slipped another notch since my last post (!) and is now at #247.

Just last month I predicted that it would drop off the top 250 well before the end of the year.

You wrote
>> Please do that 1O3623351927 ! I will be waiting for you just to tell you that you were wrong.

Uh huh. I'll be back to gloat later, fanboys and fangirls. After all, it's what petty minds like yours deserve after treating some of the legitimate, polite posters here so shabbily.

reply

So what is the point you are making 1O3623351927. It is only May so it is a bit premature to gloat. I am begining to think you are an idiot ! Ratings on this Website give movie goers an insight to the films. Why do you take them so so seriously ?

Backing down? You were happy to take the ratings seriously when it suited you and you did hotly disagree with my prediction. Anyway, you petty fangirls and fanboys are getting tedious.

>>It is only May so it is a bit premature to gloat

You don't get it do you? It's only May and Hot Fuzz is already poised for a bumping from the top 250. Do you seriously think its fortunes will improve with time? If you do, you're dumber than I thought.

See you later in the year.

reply

Now I know you are an idiot ! Take a look at Hot Fuzz's sister film Shaun of the dead. It is still in the ratings ! And that is three years older. HF will still be there at year end. You are an IDIOT !

The poorest film in the top 250 is Sin City.

reply

Alright, I loved Shaun of the Dead, favorite romantic comedy with zombies ever, and Hot Fuzz did not disappoint. I've seen Hot Fuzz at least 10 times now, and I can tell you that while there is a lot of comedy in the dialogue, most of it is in the expressions and reactions of the actors. Seeing Angel's face as he watches the Romeo and Juliet homage (and the homage itself) is one example of the subtle comedy that makes this movie awesome.

reply

Whilst I agree that I must be in the minority here, I must admit to being baffled at the high rating. I don't recall laughing once.

I wouldn't say that about Hot Fuzz. I'd say that about Shaun of the Dead (only recall three genuinely funny moments, when Shaun crashes on the fence, when they imitate zombies to get to the pub, and when they discover the gun is real. It scared me more than it made me laugh).

reply

I can understand someone justifying The Apartment over Hot Fuzz, but Singin' in the Rain? It's not a film, it's just one big excuse for some songs and dances. The jokes are cringe-inducingly bad, forced and cheesey and as soon as the guy and gal first meet you know the entire plot. It's predictable as hell and full on cliche. The songs are all pulled from other sources with it being a jukebox musical so the film can't get any credit for those which leaves it with the dance numbers. Admittedly the film's dance numbers are absolutely fantastic, but great dancing does not a great movie make.

Sin City is one of the weaker top 250 films, but it's miles better than Snatch.

Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. Hello? Hello?

Exactly. Iron Man is great fun but it's one of the least deserving films of the top 250 and it wont last there.
