why did this movie get a 7.0 rating?

I do not get it. It's OK. Not better than a 5.

reply

I know... It's crazy. It must be all the fans of the older versions of Get Smart, giving it a high rating because of their love of the franchise.

reply

I'm a fan of the old TV series. Reason I didn't give this a 1 is because that would mean a movie like the Wild Wild West would need to get a negative number. I gave it a 3. The worst Get Smart TV show (Ice Station Ziegfried) was better than this movie, and it only had Don Adams in it for a minute. The best Get Smart TV shows have 2 minutes which are better than this whole movie.

reply

I gave it a 2, which represents about as many laughs as I got out of this entire movie. (Compare to the original TV series which gave me at least ten good laughs each 1/2 hour episode.) That's really pretty sad. I'd say the problem is, this director has no concept of comedic timing, and the lead actor's delivery fell flat on that account. There is also a pile of talent wasted on unfunny bit parts. This reworking is a travesty. Really. I can't believe that Mel Brooks and Buck Henry were even "consulted" for this mess, as the credits would claim.

Brooks and Bucks don't grow on trees in Hollywood. This movie is a shameful example of an entirely untalented effort.

reply

[deleted]

I agree. Should have got Mel Brooks and Buck Henry to write it. This movie was lame, very few real laughs, poorly written, Anne Hathaway is flat and doesn't hold a candle to Barbara Feldon, and as much as I like Steve Carell he is boring in this movie. Don Adams defined the character and it a shame they couldn't even find someone with just have of his timing, wit, and personality.

The concept is a great one and the original show was a classic, and this movie could have been a lot better. Like the Avengers movie adaptation before this one, the movie makers fail to stay true to what made these series great, mess-up the chemistry between characters, and basically miss the point.

This gets a 2 for making one the best shows to ever hit television into an unbelievably dull movie.

reply

Maybe it's because we haven't seen the TV series so we have nothing to compare it to. So we give it 7's because in our unbiased opinion, we liked the movie.

reply

Everyone is different though, its a matter of opinion , I found the TV series mildly entertaining at best, I thought this movie was hilarious. Just a matter of opinion just as im not saying you're wrong for your opinion. To just say " This movie is a shameful example of an entirely untalented effort. " is wrong ..

reply

I think it is just the opposite. Fans of the TV series have not seen it and given the appropriate rating which would be much lower. I'll do my part to lower it - I gave it a 4.

reply

***flyingcowherder I know... It's crazy. It must be all the fans of the older versions of Get Smart, giving it a high rating because of their love of the franchise.***

I've been a "Get Smart" fan for 44 years and I certainly didn't give it a high rating. In fact, I rated it as low as possible. The movie was terrible.

True fans of the original series are mixed, however, in their opinions. Some like it, many don't. One of the main reasons is the characterizations were way off, not anywhere close to the original Max and 99. UGH!

However, the dedication to Don Adams and Edward Platt always brings a tear to my eye.

reply

I think you got it backwards. From my own experience, as a fan of the show as a child, and from reading through the reviews on this site, it would seem that the fans of the television series didn't care for the movie. I think those who rated it high have probably never seen the television series and went into the movie without any expectations. From that perspective, I could see how the movie might be okay, but it failed miserably at recreating the television series, which is unfortunate because Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway would have been great, if only their characters were anything like the originals.

I rated it a 5 and believe I was being kind, because the movie was nothing like the TV series; it would have been much better if it were.

reply

Hey, I was a big fan of the TV series, and I like the movie just fine. Don Adams would have liked it too. It would have been a big mistake for Steve Carrel to try to mimic Adams. He made the role his own and still reminiscent of Adam's version of Maxwell Smart.

reply

Most old fans of Get Smart hate this crummy Johnny English Remake.

Some flies are too awesome for the wall.

reply

I don't understand this either. It got decent reviews too!

I didn't find this movie entertaining in the least. I wanted to! I like Steve Carell! But it was all really childish humor, and by childish, I don't mean immature, I mean it looks like it was written by a child.

I'm so confused. Am I crazy or something? Everyone loves this movie. Am I missing something here?

There were a few parts that made me laugh, but not many. Maybe 2 genuine laughs throughout the entire movie.

reply

[deleted]

I agree.. The rating is a bit too high.

reply

Most likely nostalgia value, I personally thought it was a massive waste of talent (and the 5 main actors have done great work in the past), here they don't do anything apart from being put through a gauntlet of fights and chases, I couldn't get that at all when I saw it in theaters and still don't.

reply

Anyone who watched the old show wouldn't rate this highly because this film is simply a spy comedy with the Get Smart characters names tacked onto it.

reply

Wrong. I was a big Get Smart fan, watching it as it aired. This movie did a great job of updating the show and catching its spirit. And (blasphemy!! LOL) Carell is a better actor than Don Adams was.

reply

1/10 .. I never sleep in the theaters. This one did it for me. Other options I considered were 2) walking out, 3) killing myself.

reply

[deleted]

Should have 8.0 rating.

reply

What rocks did these losers crawl out from under? ROFL

The movie is great. It does a solid job of paying homage to its origins, yet stands well on its own. Steve Carell was a better Maxwell Smart than Don Adams was in the TV series, and that became an iconic role.

Sad news for you morons that didn't get it. Millions loved it, it made huge money, and there will be sequels. ;-)

reply

I've personally rated this film a 6. I liked the cast, and it wasn't a complete disaster -- but much of the humour I just found to be too unoriginal or predictable.

reply

I actually turned it off halfway through...I felt like I was watching an adult version of Spy Kids

reply

Except that Spy Kids is actually a funny spy film. Get Smart just isn't. 3 out of 10 seems reasonable.
I can't believe Get Smart is rated 6.6...

reply

Well, I thought 7 was pretty appropriate. I voted a 7. It's cheap mindless humor, but it's not all terrible. I've laughed a couple of times. I would only rent this movie though.

reply

Admittedly never seen the original show, but thought this was decent. I guess it's all down to expectations. Seeing the trailers you know it's not gonna be anything amzing. But it was fun, had enough funny moments to make it worthwhile and the action scenes where surprisingly good. Better than I thought it would be.
7/10 seems fair enough IMO.

reply

yeah I agree with you

I don't understand

so I can't answer your question "why did this movie get a 7.0 rating"

It's an awful film

reply

It was okay, but it was not funny, unlike the TV series.

reply

Thought it was one of the better comedy's this year and something between 6 and 7. I gave a 7. It's not extraordinary but decent and has enjoyable moments. If it were a 1 imdb.com would have to reconsider their rating system, but I admit that perhaps a 6.5 rating would be more appropriate. Anyhow there are very many films that seem a little or a little more overrated.

reply

Wow I guess I'm the only one who has the balls to stand up for this movie. Overall, I think it deserves its rating of a 7, but personally I gave it a solid 8. Now, I'm sure the OP and pretty much everyone who replied to this board is probably thinking, "wow, now all I need to know is where to find a drug that would make one so delusional." Well, contrary to what most of you might think, I am not at all delusional, just up at three in the morning discussing what I think is good about this movie and why it deserves its rating. So here it goes.

First of all, the acting was right on. Although I have never seen the original series, I think Steve Carrel played his part very well. Obviously it was not Oscar worthy or anything close, but a well played part that was not the most serious of roles. Anne Hathaway also did well, along with "Dwayne Johnson", or the Rock, and minor characters like David Koechner and James Caan. I did however have a problem with Alan Arkin who plays the Chief. He just didn't do it for me.

The action and CG was also done remarkably well considering the comedic nature of the film. The dialog was done pretty well, although there were some pretty corny lines. The story was also pretty well developed, but I have to say I suspected the Rock to be a traitor from the very beginning. The comedy elements were pretty good, although it was a little over the top at times, such as the airplane bathroom and the dance scene, for example. Overall, I think an 8 out of 10 is in order. While it certainly was not anything like Wedding Crashers or the 40 Year Old Virgin, it is definitely a well developed comedy that should be given a chance, especially with all the horrible spoofs out there, such as Meet the Spartans or Superhero Movie.

But obviously everyone who replied pretty much thought this movie was overrated, which is perfectly ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, myself included. That being said, if this movie was awful, in my opinion that would make films like Zoolander atrocious. And also, you know how I know you're gay? You like Coldplay. And it was also pretty good compared to some of the sh!t released in the spring and summer, such as Strange Wilderness, or the movie where Indiana Jones was raped by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. I guess that goes to show that Lucas and Spielberg need to retire, along with the completely average Harrison Ford. Speaking of sh!tty films, how about that God-awful Twilight movie that just came out, or that poor excuse for a werewolf move Blood and Chocolate? EVERYONE must agree, those were trash. But if this movie's rating is too high, then those ones certainly are too.

And speaking of overrated, how about Stallone's new Rambo film. And just having watched Hearts of America a few days ago, I've come to the conclusion that Uwe Boll deserves to have his ball sack ripped out and fed to him. And Mary Harron, director of American Psycho, should be shot for producing such a pathetic excuse for a psychological thriller. Oh, and back to movies in the summer, I don't think I have to even mention the biggest failure all year, The Happening. Wow. That was pretty f..king terrible. And going back a few years, I have to say I absolutely hated that poor excuse for a classic, The Sterile Cuckoo. Path to War and Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever were two 2002 films that were simply awful. Hated them both. And out of all the horror films I have ever seen, Wishmaster has to be as bad as it gets. Oh, almost forgot. Whoever thinks Mare Winningham is even the least attractive deserves to have a psychological evaluation. So thank you for reading, I know it was long. And maybe I'm on the delusional drug, but I just thought of that. =]

Wth is right.
This movie was hysterical!
But I agree... I've never seen the old series and I really don't want to XD
But, that being said, this was a great movie. Ten out of ten.
And, for the record, Anne Hathaway is a very talented actress and she did really well in this movie.
Stop hatin, it was a GREAT movie.

reply

I loved the film. Yes I havent seen the original but I thought it was a lot of fun and I laughed heaps!! I gave it an 8.

reply

Having grown up on the original I was really anxiously waiting for this to come out as soon as I heard about it and was NOT disappointed.I loved it and agree the dedication to Don Adams and Edward Platt at the end had me choked up. 2 great comedians who really delivered on the original series.

As for people saying the characterization was off, Good! who wants to watch Steve Carrel do his Don Adams impersonation?? the man isn't Don Adams, let him bring his own take on the character to the table which he did with much success in my opinion. in the original series Maxwell Smart was pretty much the dumbest and luckiest guy alive. without an ounce of common sense. at least Carrell gave him intelligence, just a total unlucky streak. take knowing all the intelligence, picking the right restaurant, the laser obstacle he was impressing 99 with until the bad luck kicked in with the rat, it was Get Smart just seen from another angle and I liked it.

I found this to be a great tribute to it's source material all the way down to figuring out a way to use old props like the suit car and shoe phone. it would not have been Get Smart without the shoe phone.

Everything was handled respectfully, cameos by original characters (Bernie Koppel driving one of Max's original cars)the lonely agent 13 hiding in the most absurd places (Bill Murray taking on the role in a tree) were all a real treat to see for someone who idolized the original series.

(Also I don't think the fat girl dance was that random. he was looking dead at the hot chick, she shot him down and in typical Maxwell Smart fashion he twisted it to not asking her and latching onto the nearest sure thing, the fat girl, to save face. Or another take on it is he kept mentioning he just lost 150 pounds so maybe he felt sorry for her. either way it was great when she flipped off the hot chick after the dance)

Thank the Gods for NETFLIX!!

reply

Agree with you!
I LOVED the old show, more than this film. But I enjoyed this film, too, and gave it an 8.

Carrell was super. Had restraint and did not (as I'd feared he would) go overboard.

Watching it with one eye on the past shows (such as I remember) I was impressed by the care in updating detail. I also did not expect the carry-forward technologies and agency history. Yes, it was still Max/86, 99, and The Chief. But they also seemed like professional descendants of the originals. Ditto the HQ and devices. The geeks were a super addition.

I actually liked Arkin's chief. No one could do exasperation like Edward Platt. But I like Arkin's choice to play him differently, as the loyal old warhorse.

My only disappointment (and my husband totally disagrees) is 99. I really missed Barbara Feldon's perennial serenity, cheerfulness, and acceptance of 86. To have the remake's 99 do the same would not be a compromise of female strength and would be much funnier.

I even had a funny dream about Dick Cheney afterwards!

A creditable job! I like it much better than Austin Powers (yuck).

To each his own, kids...

Nice standing up to the haters. People just needed a leader to get the other side rolling.

Loved this movie. Amused and entertained me greatly. Was disappointed to see it only get 2 stars in the newspaper's TV listings. Would like to watch it again.

Time to bring the reruns of the original to late night TV.

I like Steve Carrel and Anne Hathaway . . . but the acting was not "right on". Because you haven't seen the original series, you wouldn't understand this. Steve Carrel was the right choice for Max, but he had Max so messed up it made the character agonizingly unbelievable. And I don't even want to comment on Anne Hathaway's interpretation of 99. OMG, it was so far off it's more painful to watch. Alan Arkin as the Chief, I agree, he didn't do it for me either. Dwayne Johnson and James Caan played characters not in the '65 series, so they did okay.

reply

Although I have never seen the original series...

While that bit right there doesn't completely invalidate your opinion, it does make it a lot weaker. The only way one can truly appreciate a remake such as this is by having experienced the original. And most people who have watched the original, and seen how much it was botched by the new writers and actors, can see that this movie is pretty much *beep*

reply

basically you guys don't get that some other people out there liked it enough to give it a 7, instead of a 5 that you guys are trying to pass off as fact, instead of an opinion.

reply

There are not many films which I turn off half way through - this was one of them - my god it was just terrible.

reply

I thought the first half hour was just not funny at all, maybe worth a '3'. After that it improves hugely though, maybe '9' territory. So - I averaged it out to a '7'. I can understand people giving up on it but if you didn't stick with it you missed why this film has been given a '7' by the public and isn't down with the obvious failures.

reply

While I agree that 7 is a little high (6 is good), I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I went in thinking it was going to be a waste of time.

I'm a younger guy so I didn't see any of the original Get Smart.

I guess the reason I liked it so much was because I fully expected Carrell's character to play a dumb-guy, clumsy agent aloof in his own sense of grandeur and delusions. But instead he played a really smart and funny character.

I thought Alan Arkin's character was hilarious. I laughed at just about every scene he was in. I love the part where he fights the VP.

Many of the GET SMART film haters will say that only people that haven't seen the original series loved the film. I am a young man and I've saw some episodes of the original series (yes, Don Adams was a very funny man), and I like this film. It's no so bad than people says. It's just FUN and ENTERTAINMENT. Only that. For Chrsitmas I'll try to get all the complete seasons of the original. And this film was better than those crappy Seltzer/Friedberg 'Movies' and LOST IN TRANSLATION.

Remember: FUN and ENTERTAINMENT just like CON AIR.

I loved this movie. I laughed all the way through it. I'm also a huge fan of the original "Get Smart" series (love Don Adams. Literally cried when I heard he passed away), and I loved this movie.

I liked that Steve Carell did not try to do an impersonation of Don Adams or even of his character. Carell's Maxwell Smart was his own.

I gave it an 8.0. And proud of it.
